Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he intends to travel to New York City for the United Nations General Assembly despite the continuing controversy surrounding New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s past calls for his arrest.
Asked about attending the September gathering, Netanyahu said he was not concerned about the possibility and fully intended to make the trip. He noted that he has attended the high-level U.N. gathering during most years of his tenure unless security circumstances prevented him from doing so.
The comments follow a long-running dispute over the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Netanyahu. The ICC issued warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity connected to the Gaza conflict. Israel rejects the allegations and disputes the court’s jurisdiction.
Mamdani has called Netanyahu a “war criminal” and previously pledged during his mayoral campaign that he would seek Netanyahu’s arrest if the Israeli leader came to New York. Since becoming mayor, however, Mamdani has acknowledged significant legal obstacles to carrying out such a pledge.
The United States is not a member of the ICC and does not generally recognize the court’s jurisdiction over American territory or officials from nonmember countries such as Israel. Legal experts interviewed by Reuters said New York City’s mayor does not possess independent authority to enforce the ICC warrant.
There are additional legal protections surrounding foreign leaders traveling to the United Nations. Under agreements governing the U.N. headquarters and established principles of diplomatic immunity, foreign officials attending official U.N. functions receive significant protections while in the United States.
That means the controversy is not simply a disagreement between Netanyahu and Mamdani. It involves federal authority, international agreements, diplomatic immunity and America’s longstanding decision not to participate in the ICC.
President Donald Trump has made the administration’s position clear, saying Netanyahu “will not be arrested” while visiting the United States.
Trump’s position places the federal government firmly against any attempt by local authorities to detain the Israeli prime minister over the ICC warrant. The administration has also remained strongly critical of the court’s actions against Israeli officials.
Mamdani has continued criticizing Netanyahu while acknowledging that City Hall faces legal limitations. After consulting New York City’s legal department, the mayor said he lacks the authority to carry out the arrest himself and has instead called for changes at the federal level.
Netanyahu, meanwhile, appears determined not to allow the controversy to alter his plans. Asked whether Mamdani’s statements concerned him, the Israeli leader responded: “I’m not concerned, and I certainly intend to do so.”
The controversy illustrates an important distinction between political rhetoric and governmental authority. A mayor may strongly condemn a foreign leader, but foreign affairs, diplomatic relations and the treatment of visiting heads of government are overwhelmingly matters of federal and international law.
Netanyahu’s expected appearance will also put the U.S.-Israel relationship back in the international spotlight. Israel remains one of America’s closest Middle Eastern allies even as the Gaza conflict and the ICC case have generated intense political divisions.
Unless the legal circumstances change, experts say Mamdani cannot independently order Netanyahu’s arrest on the basis of the ICC warrant. Trump has gone further by publicly guaranteeing that Netanyahu will not be arrested during his visit.
Netanyahu, for his part, is signaling that he has every intention of showing up.

His son, the Crown Prince is also 53-years’ old and has already been serving as regent while his father was on medical leave.
The outlet’s report also says, “King Harald has been treated in recent weeks with cortisone for haemolytic anaemia, a condition that causes the number of red blood cells in the body to be reduced, and leads to fatigue and shortness of breath.”
The official website has also gone down since then, with the simple message, "It is with deep grief that we announce that His Majesty King Harald has passed away. King Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet Friday 28 August at 6:35 AM."

Dolly Parton’s death came after a brief battle with cancer, her representatives revealed Tuesday.
The country music legend died Aug. 25 at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville. She was 80.
Parton had been admitted to the cancer center Friday, four days before her death. Her representatives confirmed the cancer diagnosis in a statement to PEOPLE but did not disclose what type she had.
“Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched. Her unmatched generosity reached the lives of countless people whom she would never meet, yet she was always there to offer a helping hand,” the statement read.
“Whether it be the hundreds of millions of books donated through her invaluable Imagination Library or funding research that helped create a lifesaving vaccine used around the world, Dolly’s unconditional love for all people was the guiding force for her lasting impact. After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones,” the statement concluded.
The “Jolene” singer had also been dealing with kidney and autoimmune issues before her death, PEOPLE previously reported.
Just days earlier, Dolly Parton opened up about her declining health and acknowledged that she had put off addressing some medical issues while caring for her husband, Carl.
“As I’ve shared in video messages throughout the past year, I am dealing with some health issues that I just didn’t pay attention to when I was watching over [my husband] Carl. You know, this isn’t the first time I’ve had to manage something like this. Back in the early ’80s, I was down for several months with female issues, and I was struggling with my weight at the time too, so it’s not like I haven’t been through hard times with my health,” Parton told PEOPLE.
Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, announced her death in an Instagram video Tuesday on behalf of the Parton and Owens family.
“My name is Bryan Seaver, son of Cassie Parton, and I’m representing the Parton and Owens family today announcing the passing of my aunt, Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean, Sister, Sis and Granny to one generation and Gigi to the next,” he says in the video.
Seaver, who served as Parton’s head of security for more than two decades, said she had asked him years earlier to deliver the announcement.
“This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality,” he continued. “As her head of security for more than two decades, a role my father Larry held before me, I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven’t truly felt it until now.”
Seaver said the moment brought immense pride and heartbreak, but he took comfort in his faith that Parton had been reunited with Carl and other loved ones.
