Putin Suffers Major Blow As Ukraine Clobbers Critical Facility
Ukraine landed a major blow against Vladimir Putin’s war machine after a long-range drone strike slammed into one of Russia’s biggest oil-refining hubs, killing 13 people and wounding dozens more.
The strike hit Nizhnekamsk in Russia’s Tatarstan region, roughly 750 miles from the Ukrainian border, according to Russian officials and state media.
Mayor Radmir Belyayev said a child was among the dead and another 39 people were wounded.
The target was a major refinery complex in a city that plays a key role in Russia’s fuel production and war economy.
Long-range Ukrainian drones reportedly traveled nearly 800 miles before reaching the site.
Nizhnekamsk is home to two refineries and a petrochemical plant, making it one of the most important energy centers deep inside Russia.
Tatneft’s TANECO refinery, which was also targeted in June, processed about 17 million tons of crude oil in 2024 and produced millions of tons of gasoline and diesel fuel.
Ukraine has dramatically expanded its long-range drone campaign in recent months, repeatedly targeting oil refineries, fuel depots and other infrastructure tied to Moscow’s ability to wage war.
The attacks have chipped away at Russia’s refining capacity and triggered fuel disruptions across parts of the country.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has argued that the strikes are designed to force Putin to feel the cost of continuing the invasion.
‘We do deliver entirely justified responses, and every Russian strike will be met with our response. Russia’s war will be felt more and more at their own home – in Russia,’ Zelensky said late Sunday on social media.
‘The only reason this is still continuing is Russia’s unwillingness to end this war.’
Russian officials declared a period of mourning in Tatarstan following the attack.
Belyayev said the city had been hit by another large-scale drone assault.
He added: ‘This morning, the republic was subjected to another brutal attack by enemy drones. A massive attack is ongoing in the city of Nizhnekamsk.’
The strike was only one part of a broader wave of Ukrainian attacks aimed at Russian military logistics and occupied territory.
Parts of Simferopol in Russian-occupied Crimea were temporarily left without power amid another reported drone attack.
Ukraine has also intensified strikes on land routes connecting Russia to Crimea, hitting tanker trucks and vehicles on key supply corridors.
Elsewhere, a strike in occupied Makiivka in the Donetsk region reportedly hit an area used by Russian forces near a former retail complex.
Smoke was seen rising from the scene, though casualty figures were not immediately confirmed.
The escalation comes after Russia launched another heavy barrage against Ukraine over the weekend.
More than 200 missiles and drones struck Ukrainian targets Saturday night, with Odesa among the hardest-hit cities.
At least a dozen people were injured there, and Chornomorets Stadium, the city’s largest sports arena, was damaged.
Kharkiv was also hit, with a missile striking a high-rise apartment building. Officials said three people were killed and 37 were wounded.
The World Health Organization said one of its warehouses in Ukraine’s Dnipro region was struck twice in less than 24 hours.
The attacks destroyed roughly $500,000 worth of emergency medical supplies intended for front-line health facilities, though no casualties were reported.
The latest strike on Nizhnekamsk underscores just how far Ukraine’s domestically produced drones can now reach, with some reportedly capable of flying more than 1,200 miles into Russian territory.
For Putin, that means the war he launched is increasingly hitting the infrastructure that keeps his own military and economy running.

“Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched. Her unmatched generosity reached the lives of countless people whom she would never meet, yet she was always there to offer a helping hand,” the statement read.
“Whether it be the hundreds of millions of books donated through her invaluable Imagination Library or funding research that helped create a lifesaving vaccine used around the world, Dolly’s unconditional love for all people was the guiding force for her lasting impact. After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones,” the statement concluded.
The “Jolene” singer had also been dealing with kidney and autoimmune issues before her death, PEOPLE previously reported.
Just days earlier, Dolly Parton opened up about her declining health and acknowledged that she had put off addressing some medical issues while caring for her husband, Carl.
“As I’ve shared in video messages throughout the past year, I am dealing with some health issues that I just didn’t pay attention to when I was watching over [my husband] Carl. You know, this isn’t the first time I’ve had to manage something like this. Back in the early ’80s, I was down for several months with female issues, and I was struggling with my weight at the time too, so it’s not like I haven’t been through hard times with my health,” Parton told PEOPLE.
Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, announced her death in an Instagram video Tuesday on behalf of the Parton and Owens family.
“My name is Bryan Seaver, son of Cassie Parton, and I’m representing the Parton and Owens family today announcing the passing of my aunt, Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean, Sister, Sis and Granny to one generation and Gigi to the next,” he says in the video.
Seaver, who served as Parton’s head of security for more than two decades, said she had asked him years earlier to deliver the announcement.
“This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality,” he continued. “As her head of security for more than two decades, a role my father Larry held before me, I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven’t truly felt it until now.”
Seaver said the moment brought immense pride and heartbreak, but he took comfort in his faith that Parton had been reunited with Carl and other loved ones.
