Around the table: Tucker Carlson, soon-to-be-former Rep. Thomas Massie from Kentucky, former Trump counterterrorism official Joe Kent, their spouses, and Greene’s husband Brian Glenn. The grievance animating this particular candlelit gathering is the Iran war. Trump promised no more foreign wars, Greene argues, and launching strikes against the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism — the regime that tried to kill him, that funds Hamas, that has killed American service members, that fired ballistic missiles at U.S. forces in Jordan — constitutes a betrayal of that promise.
There are legitimate debates to be had about Iran policy. Four Republicans in the House voted with Democrats on a war powers resolution this week, and their concerns about congressional authorization deserve to be engaged seriously, even if the timing and the optics were terrible. These are real constitutional questions with real stakes.
But that’s not quite what’s happening here. What’s happening here is a photo of former officeholders sitting around a table with cookies, calling themselves a movement, and apparently planning to either launch a third party — Tucker Carlson floated this idea in June — or simply apply maximum pressure on the Trump administration from the outside.
A quick look at the roster helps clarify the stakes. Greene was ousted from Congress in her primary. Massie was targeted by the Speaker and is leaving at the end of his term. Carlson was fired from Fox News and has spent the intervening period building a streaming platform and feuding with various conservatives. Kent ran for office, lost, and now appears as a political commentator.
Former this. Former that. Ex-this. Once-was-that.
For what it’s worth, Tucker Carlson is a genuinely talented communicator and Joe Kent is a serious person with a serious national security background. And the anti-war instinct they’re channeling resonates with a real constituency inside the conservative movement. Also, Gallup consistently shows roughly 60 percent of Americans saying a third party is needed. But that same polling shows only about 15 percent saying they’d be “very likely” to vote for one.
The gap between “we need a third party” and “I will actually vote for this third party led by these specific people right now” is where most political movements go to die.
The movement has begun, says the former congresswoman, over cookies in a cabin.
With 97 days until the midterms, this is the best the anti-Trump right could summon. Republicans will sleep tonight.
For the record, I’m no fan of the Iran war. But I know that it’s also very possible to agree with 90 percent of what Trump has said and done and remain an ardent supporter. On Trump’s worst day he’s 1000 times better than Kamala Harris would have been.

The country music legend died Aug. 25 at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville. She was 80.
Parton had been admitted to the cancer center Friday, four days before her death. Her representatives confirmed the cancer diagnosis in a statement to PEOPLE but did not disclose what type she had.
“Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched. Her unmatched generosity reached the lives of countless people whom she would never meet, yet she was always there to offer a helping hand,” the statement read.
“Whether it be the hundreds of millions of books donated through her invaluable Imagination Library or funding research that helped create a lifesaving vaccine used around the world, Dolly’s unconditional love for all people was the guiding force for her lasting impact. After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones,” the statement concluded.
The “Jolene” singer had also been dealing with kidney and autoimmune issues before her death, PEOPLE previously reported.
Just days earlier, Dolly Parton opened up about her declining health and acknowledged that she had put off addressing some medical issues while caring for her husband, Carl.
“As I’ve shared in video messages throughout the past year, I am dealing with some health issues that I just didn’t pay attention to when I was watching over [my husband] Carl. You know, this isn’t the first time I’ve had to manage something like this. Back in the early ’80s, I was down for several months with female issues, and I was struggling with my weight at the time too, so it’s not like I haven’t been through hard times with my health,” Parton told PEOPLE.
Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, announced her death in an Instagram video Tuesday on behalf of the Parton and Owens family.
“My name is Bryan Seaver, son of Cassie Parton, and I’m representing the Parton and Owens family today announcing the passing of my aunt, Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean, Sister, Sis and Granny to one generation and Gigi to the next,” he says in the video.
Seaver, who served as Parton’s head of security for more than two decades, said she had asked him years earlier to deliver the announcement.
“This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality,” he continued. “As her head of security for more than two decades, a role my father Larry held before me, I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven’t truly felt it until now.”
Seaver said the moment brought immense pride and heartbreak, but he took comfort in his faith that Parton had been reunited with Carl and other loved ones.
