Ted Cruz Predicts AOC Will Run For President 2028, Schumer Is ‘Finished’
Sen. Ted Cruz predicted that two of the Democratic Party’s most prominent progressive figures could reshape its leadership ahead of the 2028 election.
The Texas Republican made his prediction in a striking social media post.
He claimed that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) is likely to seek the presidency while New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani could eventually replace Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).
Speaking in a video posted Tuesday on X, the Texas Republican said he believes Ocasio-Cortez will run for president and Mamdani will ultimately succeed Schumer in the U.S. Senate.
“I think AOC is going to run for president, and I think Zohran Mamdani is going to replace Chuck Schumer in the Senate,” Cruz said.
He also urged Republicans not to dismiss the growing influence of progressive Democrats.
“Some Republicans are cheering because the Democrats are crazy,” Cruz said. “This country needs two parties that actually love America.”
In a separate post on X, Cruz argued that Schumer’s political future within the Democratic Party is limited.
“Chuck Schumer is finished. He can never again win a Democrat primary in New York. He knows it. Which is why I joke that he will be the inaugural member of the AOC for President Campaign,” Cruz wrote.
Although the 2028 presidential election is still more than two years away, speculation about potential Democratic candidates has intensified as early polling begins to test possible primary matchups. No major Democratic candidate has formally entered the race.
Ocasio-Cortez has repeatedly declined to discuss any potential presidential campaign. Responding to recent polling, she said she remains focused on the 2026 midterm elections.
“I think there’s two things, one is that, you know, polls are polls, and a horse race is a horse race,” Ocasio-Cortez told The Independent.
“I am, of course, I think, very deeply humbled and grateful to folks who participate and convey that confidence.”
She added, “I think my main focus is really genuinely just the midterms right now, and we have to make sure that we win this majority.”
A University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll released Wednesday found Ocasio-Cortez leading likely Democratic primary voters with 22% support.
Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg followed with 21%, while Sen. Mark Kelly received 9%, California Gov. Gavin Newsom 8%, Sen. Bernie Sanders 6%, and former Vice President Kamala Harris 5%.
An Emerson College poll released last week produced different results, placing Buttigieg first with 19%, followed by Newsom at 17%.
Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Jon Ossoff each received 13%, Harris 8%, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear 7%, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro 5%, and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker 3%.
On the Republican side, early polling has frequently identified Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as potential contenders for the party’s 2028 presidential nomination.
Mamdani has also emerged as a prominent figure within the Democratic Party following his rise in New York politics, fueling speculation about his long-term political ambitions.
While Cruz’s predictions remain speculative, his comments reflect the growing focus on the Democratic Party’s next generation of leadership as both parties begin looking ahead to the 2028 presidential election.
Democratic socialists have gained increasing influence within the Democratic Party over the past decade, driven by support for policies such as Medicare for All, tuition-free public college, expanded labor protections, higher taxes on wealthy Americans, and a larger government role in the economy.
The movement’s rise has been fueled by prominent figures such as Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), along with younger progressive candidates who have won congressional, state, and local elections.
Recent election cycles have seen additional democratic socialist candidates secure victories in Democratic primaries, particularly in urban districts, prompting renewed debate over the party’s ideological direction and path.

“They might suddenly go: ‘Why don’t we try Canada for a while? Why don’t we try Australia?’ It’s one of the great things about being private individuals [that they can live where they choose].”

It has been reported that the family will keep their Montecito home in America, and their Portugal holiday home. It has also been reported that the family's chickens will stay at the Montecito home, while the family's two dogs are expected to fly over to the UK with them.
