Donald Trump's MAGA allies have unleashed a furious backlash against Prince Harry and Meghan Markle after their bombshell decision to return to Britain
Donald Trump’s most vocal MAGA supporters have seized on Harry and Meghan’s dramatic decision to quit California and re-establish their family in Britain, with one leading conservative figure alleging the move is linked to the couple’s opposition to the US President.
The Sussexes confirmed on Wednesday that they will head back across the Atlantic this month, bringing an end to six years of life in America. Their announcement has sparked an immediate political backlash, with the couple’s long-running tensions with Mr Trump being placed firmly back under the microscope.
The news had been circulated to several media organisations before the couple made their plans public, including a report which directly connected the move with their strained relationship with the President. Harry and Meghan are expected to remain in Britain for an "extended period", with Archie and Lilibet already enrolled at a school in the UK.
Among the first to react was Katie Miller, the wife of White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller. Posting on X, she declared: "They are moving back to Britain because they don't like President Trump."
She accompanied the remark with a People Magazine article which said the Sussexes "have made no secret of their disillusionment with the current White House" ahead of the midterm elections. Miller subsequently took further swipes at Meghan, claiming she "always just wanted to be a celebrity" and alleging that the couple was "broke".
Conservative broadcaster Megyn Kelly also weighed into the row after news of the transatlantic move emerged, reports the Daily Mail. "We've done our time here in America my dear friend!" she wrote on X, responding to right-wing commentator Dan Wootton's post describing the development as "Megxit" being "reversed".
The Sussexes' strained relationship with Mr Trump is not new. Harry previously criticised the President after Trump claimed NATO allies had "stayed a little back" during the war in Afghanistan. The President had also questioned whether NATO would come to America's aid if the US "ever needed them".
Harry, who served in Afghanistan, responded by stressing that "every allied nation was obliged to stand with the United States ... in pursuit of our shared security."
He invoked NATO's Article 5, saying: "Allies answered that call." Harry added: "I served there. I made lifelong friends there. And I lost friends there." There could, however, be other reasons behind the Sussexes' decision to leave their £11million Californian home.
People Magazine reported that Harry believes Meghan is becoming more warmly received by the British public. The Duke was said to have been encouraged by the level of interest surrounding his wife during a recent trip to Birmingham. Despite their return, the Sussexes are not expected to resume their former positions within the monarchy. The couple will live in a non-royal property and will remain private, non-working members of the Royal Family.
King Charles was told by Harry on Sunday that the family intended to return to Britain later this month. The monarch is understood to "welcome" the prospect of spending more time with his son and grandchildren on a private and personal basis. However, the King has made clear there will be "no alteration" to Harry and Meghan's position or status as private individuals and non-working members of the Royal Family.
That remains consistent with their "clearly expressed wishes and agreement over past years".
Sources have stressed that a return to royal duties is not part of the Sussexes' "plan". The Express understands there was no discussion of the move when Harry, Meghan and their children met Charles at Highgrove earlier this summer. The timing could therefore indicate that the King was caught off guard by the announcement.
Harry had already been due to travel to Britain next month for a WellChild Awards event, with accommodation arranged for him at Buckingham Palace. That arrangement will no longer be necessary, however, as the Duke, 41, and Duchess, 45, are expected to return with their children within the next two weeks and remain for an extended period. Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, have already secured places at a British school, with reports suggesting the family could remain in the country until their children's education is complete.
There is still no confirmation that the relocation will be permanent. For security and privacy reasons, the address of their new British home has not been disclosed. Harry and Meghan are nevertheless expected to hold on to their £11million Montecito property, where they have lived since leaving Britain for America.
They also retain a home in Portugal. The unexpected homecoming marks a dramatic new chapter six years after the Sussexes stepped away from working royal duties and began their life across the Atlantic.

Prince Harry should have "resigned in disgrace" from the board of a controversial African wildlife charity, a commentator says. James Walker makes the bombshell remark in Wednesday's episode of this publication's podcast, Daily Expresso.
He and the show's host, JJ Anisiobi, delve into the Duke of Sussex's dramatic decision to step down from African Parks. James, commenting on the controversy, said: "When you hear about this stuff and how long it's been going on for, you should be resigning in disgrace. [Harry] should be saying: 'I'm not touching that with a barge pole. That is a failed entity. We're going nowhere near it'.
"But no. He's still saying he's going to 'support their mission'. And again this Caroline Pearce, executive director of Survival International, goes on to say: 'His departure doesn't undo that record'.
"She alleged that African Parks was aware of the abuses for years, but it was only after Survival complained to Harry that the charity finally commissioned an investigation."
James added: "Well, she's got a point."
It emerged on Monday (August 24) that Harry was no longer a board member of the wildlife charity.
The conservation organisation has admitted that human rights abuses were committed by its rangers against members of the semi-nomadic Baka group in Congo-Brazzaville.
African Parks has said since that it has improved its safeguarding processes both in the Odzala-Kokoua National Park and institutionally.
Its admission followed an independent human rights investigation into allegations guards managed and paid by the charity had beaten, raped and tortured indigenous people in Odzala-Kokoua National Park.
Harry was president of the charity for six years before he became a member of its board of directors in 2023.
A spokesman for the Duke said he remains an active and avid supporter of African Parks. He added: "The Duke is proud of his 10 years with African Parks and fully supports the ongoing strengthening of its board.
"His commitment to conservation in Africa continues and he remains a supporter of African Parks’ mission."
Human rights organisation, Survival International, said it had been calling on Harry to step down from African Parks for years.
The group's director, Caroline Pearce, said in a statement: "It’s outrageous that for 10 years Prince Harry has served African Parks while the organisation has been responsible for abuse and violence against Indigenous people.
"His departure doesn't undo that record — African Parks itself must now be held accountable, and must abandon this model of fortress conservation for good."
Survival International said indigenous peoples know how best to manage their land and the idea outsiders know better is racist and colonial.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are just days away from relocating back to Britain with their children.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be relocating back to the UK in a matter of days, however, they may not actually be staying here permanently. Just last week, it was reported that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, alongside their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, will be moving back to Britain.
It was reported that the children had already been enrolled on British schools, with the exact name and location of the school not revealed. It was also reported that the family would live in a private, non-royal residence, with the location kept private for security reasons. The motive behind the move was not reported.
While many think this means the Sussex family will be back in the UK - the country they once criticised very publicly - someone close to the couple has revealed that it could actually only be temporary.
The source told The Times: “It’ll be an extended period of time — it could be six months, it could be a year, it could be more — I don’t think even they know yet.
“They might suddenly go: ‘Why don’t we try Canada for a while? Why don’t we try Australia?’ It’s one of the great things about being private individuals [that they can live where they choose].”

Rumours have been swirling about why they are relocating, with some people believing it is due to Harry’s desire to be close to King Charles.

The family are reportedly set to fly over from California before the end of August, allowing the children to settle before they start at their new school. It has been reported that the family will keep their Montecito home in America, and their Portugal holiday home. It has also been reported that the family's chickens will stay at the Montecito home, while the family's two dogs are expected to fly over to the UK with them.
