What the Investigation Could Prove

Chapter 16 - What the Investigation Could Prove

By spring, investigators had assembled a clearer picture of the financial scheme. Certain payments from my account had been made without valid authorization, and some of the paperwork supporting the transactions was disputed. Bellweather's billing records contained descriptions of services that couldn't be matched to work performed at my property.

The authorities assessed possible offenses separately from the civil claims, while Marian pursued recovery and correction of the property records. A financial settlement didn't automatically resolve every question of responsibility, and I learned not to speak of all the money as recovered until it truly was.

Sloan's attorneys disputed her intent and argued that she believed Harrison had legitimate authority. Darren's counsel challenged parts of the accounting. Harrison acknowledged his own role and agreed to cooperate within the advice of his lawyer.

I wanted one clean moment when someone shouted the truth and everyone else stopped pretending. Real accountability arrived in folders and deadlines instead.

One afternoon, Marian called with a useful development: disputed transactions were being reversed or addressed through agreed restitution arrangements, subject to remaining approvals. The first recovered amount appeared in my account a few days later.

I stared at the number. It was neither all the money nor nothing. It was the beginning of a repair.

That night I invited June, Ruth, and my community-center music group for dinner. We made spaghetti and played an old word game until nearly eleven. Frank brought a harmonica and gave an enthusiastic, dreadful performance of "Blue Moon."

I laughed so hard I cried.

After the guests left, I stood in the quiet kitchen. My home didn't feel empty. It felt mine again.

The next morning, I called a locksmith to replace the keypad on the study—not as an act of punishment, but because the household had changed and security needed to reflect that. Marian confirmed the applicable occupancy arrangements were settled before I changed any access controls.

Sometimes reclaiming a life happens in legal documents. Sometimes it happens when you can leave your own keys on the counter and trust they'll be there when you return.
