A Second Betrayal at the Board Meeting

Chapter 09 - A Second Betrayal at the Board Meeting

The foundation board assembled in an emergency session. Harold brought a thick packet defending the proposed sale. Rebecca presented evidence of the undisclosed beneficial interest and asked for independent analysis of the valuation and approval process.

I expected everyone to support a pause. Instead, two trustees accused me of letting a broken engagement interfere with business judgment.

One said, “Your father would be ashamed to see the family divided over a draft transaction.”

I felt my temper rise. Then I remembered Emily's face on the staircase. I looked directly at the trustee.

“My father's legacy is the reason we're reviewing this. We're not going to vote on a transfer until the board understands who benefits and what we're surrendering.”

The room went quiet.

A retired school principal named Ruth Kaplan supported a pause. She had served on the foundation since Dad's early years. “The building wasn't a line item to him,” she said. “It was a promise.”

The board voted to suspend consideration of the sale and commission an independent review. Harold was placed on leave pending that process.

As I left, Ruth caught my sleeve. “You need to ask why Emily cared enough to risk an argument in front of everyone.”

“She found the documents.”

“That's part of it. But she also knows about the families who depend on that building.”

Ruth handed me a packet of letters from former students. Some had gone to college. Others had learned English there, found mentors, or simply had a safe place after school.

I read them in the car. Dad had never told me half of what the program meant to people.

When I called Emily, I asked whether she would consider presenting her restoration plan to the board once she recovered.

She laughed. “Daniel, I've been waiting three months for you to ask.”
