Chapter 01 - THE MAFIA BOSS CAUGHT HIS PREGNANT MAID LEAVING WITH A BLACK SUITCASE—THEN FOUND HIS DEAD WIFE'S WEDDING DRESS AND A PHOTO THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

## chapter 01 - The Suitcase at the Bottom of the Stairs

The most feared man in Chicago came home to find his pregnant housemaid crying on the marble staircase, a black suitcase beside her and his elegant fiancée standing above her in a scarlet evening gown.

"She's stealing from your dead wife," Vanessa Vale announced.

The housemaid, twenty-six-year-old Emma Sullivan, pressed one hand against her rounded stomach. Her other hand gripped the suitcase so tightly that the knuckles had gone white. "Please, Mr. Moretti. It's not what she says."

Adrian Moretti did not ask why the woman was crying. He did not ask whether she was hurt. He looked at the suitcase and heard the single word Vanessa knew would cut through his judgment: wife.

His wife Rose had been dead for three years.

"Open it," Adrian ordered.

"Please," Emma whispered. "I promised her I wouldn't."

The room fell silent. Vanessa took a step down the stairs. "You hear that? She's admitting she took things from Rose."

Adrian crossed the marble floor in three long strides. He had built his reputation by making decisions without hesitation, but the closer he got to Emma, the stranger her face became. She wasn't looking at him like a thief who'd been discovered. She looked like a person standing between a terrible truth and somebody desperate to bury it.

"Whom did you promise?" he asked.

Emma swallowed. "Your wife."

Vanessa laughed. "Rose died years before this woman was hired."

"I knew Rose before I worked here," Emma said.

That was when Adrian noticed the blood on Emma's lower lip, the torn seam of her uniform, and the luggage tag with a destination printed in block letters: ST. CATHERINE'S MATERNITY SHELTER.

A strange unease passed through him. "Why are you leaving?"

Vanessa answered for her. "I fired her. She was trying to sneak out with property belonging to the family."

"I didn't fire myself," Emma whispered. "And I wasn't sneaking. She told me to be gone before you got home."

Adrian crouched beside the suitcase. His hand hovered over its locks. Emma flinched, then forced herself still. In the silence, her breathing sounded painfully labored.

"Are you having trouble?" Adrian asked.

"I'm scared," she admitted.

It was the first honest sentence anyone had spoken in the foyer.

He unlatched the suitcase.

Folded inside was a wedding dress: ivory tulle, delicate embroidered sleeves, a bodice covered in tiny pearl blossoms. Adrian recognized every detail. Rose had worn it the day they married under the old stone arch at St. Michael's.

Beneath the veil lay a photograph, its edges softened by age. Adrian lifted it. Two young women stood together in the courtyard of a maternity hospital. One was Rose. The other looked like Emma, only younger, with a rounder face and the same unmistakable gray-green eyes.

On the reverse, in Rose's handwriting, were seven words: IF SOMETHING HAPPENS, TRUST MY LITTLE SISTER.

Adrian forgot how to breathe.

"Sister?" he whispered.

Vanessa's glass slipped from her hand and broke on the stairs.

Emma began to cry harder. "She made me promise not to tell you until I had proof. I thought I'd found it today. Then Vanessa found me in the nursery."

Adrian looked up sharply. "What proof?"

Emma placed her palm over her stomach. "The proof that Rose didn't die the way they told you."

Vanessa came down the stairs, her heels striking like a countdown. "Adrian, that's absurd. She's unstable. Look at her."

He looked. Really looked. The maid had a bruise forming along her wrist and a medical appointment card sticking from her apron pocket. Her lips were pale. She was standing only because she refused to leave Rose's wedding dress behind.

"Who hurt your wrist?" Adrian asked.

Emma glanced at Vanessa.

His heart dropped.

"Emma," he said quietly, "tell me what happened."

Vanessa stepped forward and reached for the suitcase. "We should destroy this nonsense before it gets any worse."

Adrian shut the lid between them and rose to his full height.

"Don't touch it."

For the first time in their eighteen-month engagement, Vanessa looked afraid of him. But Emma's knees suddenly buckled, and Adrian's fear shifted to someone far more vulnerable.

"Daniel!" he shouted to his security chief. "Call an ambulance. Now."

Emma sank onto the lowest step. "My baby," she breathed. "Please don't let her take my baby."

Adrian knelt beside her, keeping his hands where she could see them. "Nobody is taking your child."

She stared into his face. "That's what Rose said before they took hers."

The words struck harder than any bullet Adrian had ever survived.

He had buried Rose after being told she'd died without ever giving birth.

Now her younger sister was looking at him with terrified eyes and telling him there had been a baby.

And behind them, Vanessa was already reaching for her phone.
