The Locked Room Beside the Lake

Chapter 03 - The Locked Room Beside the Lake

At 2:13 in the morning, the security alarm at the Moretti estate went off.

Adrian was awake before the second warning tone.

He had been sitting in Isabella's old bedroom, staring at a photograph of their wedding day.

The alarm came from the summer house.

For three years, Adrian had refused to enter that building.

He ordered it maintained, kept the electricity running, and instructed the groundskeepers never to touch Isabella's belongings.

Part of him believed that preserving the room exactly as she left it might somehow preserve her presence.

Now someone was inside.

Adrian grabbed his phone.

“Marco.”

“I'm already on my way,” his security chief answered.

“Who's there?”

“Camera seven was disabled. Motion sensor activated twelve seconds later.”

Adrian rose.

“Lock down the property.”

“What about Miss Sterling?”

“Keep someone outside her room.”

He ended the call and hurried downstairs.

Outside, cold rain swept across the gardens.

The lake was a black mirror beneath a moonless sky.

Adrian climbed into a security vehicle with Marco.

Neither spoke during the short drive.

When they reached the summer house, the front door stood open.

A figure in dark clothing sprinted through the side garden.

Marco shouted.

“Stop!”

The intruder disappeared between the trees.

Two guards pursued him while Adrian stepped inside.

The familiar smell nearly brought him to his knees.

Cedarwood.

Dust.

And the faint trace of Isabella's lavender perfume.

The living room was exactly as he remembered.

A cream sofa.

A blue blanket.

Children's books stacked beside the fireplace.

An unfinished painting rested on an easel near the window.

Adrian touched the back of the sofa.

Three years vanished.

He could almost hear Isabella laughing as she told Noah not to jump on the cushions.

Then Marco called from the hallway.

“Boss. You need to see this.”

The door to Isabella's private office had been forced open.

Papers covered the floor.

A filing cabinet stood empty.

And the wooden panel beneath the window had been pried loose.

Someone had been searching for something.

Adrian walked toward the desk.

A framed photograph had been knocked onto the floor.

He picked it up.

Isabella, Rachel Carter, and a group of smiling women stood outside the first shelter funded by Isabella's foundation.

Across the bottom, Isabella had written:

Every woman deserves a safe place to begin again.

Adrian swallowed.

Behind him, Marco examined the broken panel.

“Whoever came here knew where to look.”

“Did they find anything?”

“Hard to tell.”

Adrian noticed a small scratch beneath the desk.

Three parallel lines.

He remembered Isabella making them with a pocketknife.

She had laughed when he asked why she was damaging expensive furniture.

So you'll remember where I keep my secrets.

Adrian had assumed she was joking.

Now he knelt.

He slid his fingers beneath the desk and found a tiny metal latch.

A narrow compartment opened.

Inside lay a sealed envelope.

The words on the front stopped his breathing.

For Adrian — if I can't tell you myself.

Back inside the mansion, Emily woke to someone tapping at her door.

She sat upright.

“Who is it?”

A small voice answered.

“Miss Emily?”

She hurried to open the door.

Noah stood in the hallway wearing his pajamas.

His face was pale.

“What's wrong, sweetheart?”

He held out his silver airplane.

“Bad dream.”

Emily knelt.

“Do you want to tell me about it?”

He nodded.

“Mommy was calling.”

Emily gently took his hand.

“Come inside.”

She settled him on the sofa near the fireplace.

Noah curled beside her.

For several minutes, he said nothing.

Then he whispered, “Vanessa said Mommy didn't love Daddy anymore.”

Emily's chest tightened.

“When did she say that?”

“Before Mommy went away.”

Emily remained still.

Noah stared at the fireplace.

“She said Mommy wanted to leave us.”

“Did Mommy tell you that?”

He shook his head quickly.

“Mommy said we were going on a trip.”

“A trip?”

“To see Aunt Rachel.”

Emily's heart began hammering.

Her sister.

Isabella had planned to leave the estate and meet Rachel.

“Did Mommy say when?”

Noah frowned.

“After Daddy came home.”

Emily rubbed his back.

“And what happened?”

“Vanessa was mad.”

“Why?”

“Mommy wouldn't give her the papers.”

Emily's breath caught.

“What papers?”

Noah pressed his lips together.

Then he touched the airplane.

Emily looked at it.

It was the same toy he carried everywhere.

The same airplane she had repaired.

“Does this have something to do with the papers?” she asked.

He nodded.

“Mommy said it was our secret.”

Emily examined the airplane.

The metal body was unusually heavy.

One wing had been repaired with her wire, but a tiny compartment beneath the fuselage remained closed.

She carefully turned it over.

A miniature screw held the panel in place.

“Noah, may I open this?”

He hesitated.

Then nodded.

Emily borrowed a small screwdriver from her sewing kit.

With trembling fingers, she loosened the panel.

Something slid into her palm.

A tiny memory card.

Emily stared.

Noah whispered, “Mommy said Daddy would know.”

At the summer house, Adrian opened Isabella's envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

His wife's familiar handwriting struck him harder than any physical blow.

Adrian,

If you're reading this, it means I was right to be afraid.

I wish I could have told you everything sooner. I wanted to protect you, but I realize now that silence only protects the people who are hurting us.

I discovered irregularities in the foundation's accounts. Donations meant for women and children were redirected through companies I don't recognize. When I questioned Vanessa, she told me to stop looking.

Then someone began threatening Rachel.

I don't know how deeply this goes, but I know Vanessa isn't acting alone.

Please believe me when I say I never stopped loving you. If anything happens, protect our son. He is the best part of both of us.

And Adrian, whatever they tell you, I was not planning to leave you.

I was planning to come home with the truth.

Adrian lowered the letter.

His hands were shaking.

For three years, Vanessa had told him Isabella had been unhappy.

That she had considered leaving the marriage.

That she had been struggling emotionally and might have behaved recklessly.

He had carried those words like punishment.

He had believed he failed his wife.

Now he understood.

Someone had rewritten her final days.

Someone had turned her courage into instability.

And he had accepted the lie.

Marco watched him carefully.

“Adrian?”

Adrian folded the letter.

“Call Detective Harris. Tell him we found a letter. Secure the building and preserve everything.”

“What about the intruder?”

“We'll find him.”

Adrian looked toward the balcony.

Rainwater glistened on the railing.

He remembered standing there after Isabella's funeral, wondering why she had stepped outside during a thunderstorm.

Now the question felt different.

Maybe she hadn't stepped outside willingly.

Maybe someone had made sure she never came back in.

When Adrian returned to the mansion, Emily was waiting in the study.

Noah slept upstairs under Margaret's supervision.

She placed the memory card on his desk.

“Your son gave me this.”

Adrian stared.

“Where did he get it?”

“It was hidden inside his airplane.”

Adrian remembered buying that toy for Noah's third birthday.

Isabella had painted a tiny blue star on its tail.

His wife had hidden evidence inside something their son would never willingly surrender.

Adrian sat down.

“Have you watched it?”

“No. I thought you should be here.”

He looked at her for a long moment.

Then called Marco.

A secure laptop arrived ten minutes later.

Marco made a forensic copy of the card before opening the files.

There were three video clips.

Two spreadsheets.

And one audio recording.

Adrian opened the first video.

The screen showed Isabella sitting in her private office.

Her hair was tied back.

She wore a white sweater.

The timestamp read three days before her death.

“Adrian,” she began, looking directly into the camera, “I don't know whether I'll ever have the courage to show you this.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

It was her voice.

Clear.

Alive.

Tender.

“I know you've been worried about me. I know Vanessa has told you I'm exhausted and struggling. But I need you to understand something.”

She leaned closer.

“I'm not losing my mind.”

Emily reached for the edge of the desk.

Isabella continued.

“Someone has been stealing from the foundation. I believe Vanessa is involved, but she's not the person controlling everything.”

The video flickered.

Isabella glanced toward the doorway.

Then she whispered a name.

“Richard Sterling.”

Adrian went completely still.

Richard Sterling.

Vanessa's father.

A billionaire property developer.

One of Adrian's oldest business partners.

And the man who had encouraged Adrian to marry Vanessa after Isabella's death.

Isabella looked directly into the camera.

“If Richard finds out I have the records, I don't know what he'll do.”

The video ended.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Adrian closed his eyes.

He had trusted Richard for fifteen years.

He had trusted Vanessa with his home.

And he had let both of them stand beside his wife's coffin.

Marco's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and suddenly stiffened.

“What?”

Adrian looked up.

Marco lowered the phone.

“Security found the intruder's abandoned vehicle.”

“Who owns it?”

Marco hesitated.

“It's registered to a company owned by Richard Sterling.”

Adrian rose.

Then the mansion's emergency line rang.

Margaret's terrified voice came through the speaker.

“Mr. Moretti! Come upstairs!”

Adrian was already moving.

“What happened?”

Margaret screamed.

“NOAH IS GONE!”
