The Second Recording

Chapter 12 - The Second Recording

The first recording had proven I wasn't responsible for taking Grace to the pool.

The second revealed something far more disturbing.

It came from an old voice-message system connected to the estate's internal security office.

During the review, investigators found a preserved message Margaret had left shortly before the charity event.

She had called the night supervisor and instructed him to disable the pool cameras.

Her stated reason was privacy for the guests.

That alone wasn't proof of harmful intent.

But the timing mattered.

Later, another conversation had been captured on the supervisor's voicemail after Margaret apparently failed to end the call properly.

Her voice was audible.

So was another woman's.

The second woman was a private household consultant named Valerie Sloan.

Ethan knew the name.

Valerie had been advising Margaret on restructuring the estate's staffing and caregiving arrangements.

The recording was short.

At first, the women discussed camera coverage and the event schedule.

Then Valerie said, "This is getting dangerous."

Margaret replied, "Ethan won't make the necessary decisions while he thinks everything is fine."

"What if the baby gets hurt?"

There was a pause.

Margaret answered, "Nothing is supposed to happen to her."

Valerie sounded frightened.

"Then don't do it."

The recording ended.

Ethan listened in stunned silence.

The words didn't explain every step of what happened.

But they suggested that Margaret and Valerie had discussed some plan involving Grace's safety before the incident.

The investigators obtained the recording through the appropriate process and began checking its authenticity and context.

Valerie was interviewed.

At first, she refused to explain.

Then, through her attorney, she acknowledged that Margaret had discussed creating an incident that would make Ethan distrust the household caregivers.

According to Valerie, Margaret wanted Ethan to place greater control of Grace's care and the estate's administration in her hands.

Valerie denied knowing that the baby would fall into the pool.

Her account required corroboration.

But it changed the direction of the investigation.

Ethan sat in his study after hearing the update.

His mother had not merely panicked and blamed an employee after an accident.

She had been discussing a manufactured crisis.

A crisis involving his daughter.

He stared at Grace's photograph.

Then whispered, "What have you done, Mother?"

When Ethan called me, I was preparing dinner for Owen, who had been allowed a brief visit home between appointments.

I answered reluctantly.

"Hello?"

"Clara. The investigators found more evidence."

I sat down.

He told me what they could share.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Then I whispered, "She knew something might happen."

"That's what they're investigating."

I covered my mouth.

I thought about Grace beneath the blue water.

Her tiny arms.

Her motionless face.

Then I thought about Margaret's expression afterward.

The way she'd pointed at me.

The way she'd never even attempted to comfort the baby.

I began shaking.

Owen came into the kitchen.

"Clara?"

I lowered the phone.

My brother sat beside me.

Ethan's voice continued softly.

"Clara, are you there?"

I wiped my eyes.

"Yes."

"I need you to know I'm cooperating fully."

I swallowed.

"Then tell the truth. All of it."

"I will."

"And don't make this about how guilty you feel."

There was silence.

Then he answered.

"You're right."

I looked at Owen.

His hand rested over mine.

Ethan continued.

"This is about Grace. And what happened to you."

For the first time, I believed he understood that an apology wasn't the center of the story.

May you like

Accountability was.
