The Secret in Isabella's Will

Chapter 09 - The Secret in Isabella's Will
Isabella Vance had been wealthier than most people realized.
She came from a family that owned a regional manufacturing company, and her inheritance included investments, property, and a significant interest in a charitable foundation.
When she married Ethan, she insisted on keeping part of her estate independently managed.
Ethan respected that decision.
Margaret hated it.
At the time, Ethan dismissed the arguments as disagreements between two strong-willed women.
Now he remembered how often his mother had accused Isabella of mistrusting the family.
"Marriage means unity," Margaret would say.
Isabella always answered, "Unity doesn't require surrendering every decision."
Ethan hadn't understood why the disagreement mattered so much.
Until his attorney showed him Isabella's original estate instructions.
A substantial portion of her property was held for Grace.
The documents also appointed independent trustees and limited Margaret's authority.
Then came the proposed amendment.
It would have allowed Margaret greater influence over distributions and certain decisions relating to Grace's assets if Ethan became unable to serve.
Ethan stared at the document.
"Who prepared this?"
"An outside attorney contacted by your mother."
"Did I sign it?"
"No."
He exhaled.
"Then it never took effect?"
"Not as written. But we're reviewing related communications."
Ethan looked at the date.
The amendment had been drafted two weeks before the pool incident.
His daughter had nearly drowned.
And someone had been preparing documents addressing what might happen if he became unable to manage her affairs.
The coincidence was frightening.
Ethan requested a comprehensive audit of the estate's financial arrangements.
He also asked the investigators to review the timeline carefully.
He didn't want assumptions.
He wanted evidence.
Meanwhile, Margaret's attorney contacted him.
His mother wished to return home.
She claimed the situation had been exaggerated.
Ethan refused.
Then she sent a handwritten letter.
My darling Ethan,
I have given my life to this family. I raised you, protected you, and stood beside you when Isabella died.
One misunderstanding should not destroy everything.
Ethan stared at the words.
One misunderstanding.
That was what she called it.
He placed the letter beside Isabella's notebook.
One woman had begged him to establish boundaries.
The other demanded that he forget what had happened.
And for the first time, he understood that love didn't require him to choose his mother's version of reality.
That evening, Ethan returned to the nursery.
Grace sat on a blanket surrounded by soft toys.
He lowered himself beside her.
"Hey, beautiful."
She looked up.
Then grabbed his finger.
He smiled.
For months, he'd been afraid that getting close to his daughter would make Isabella's absence hurt more.
Now he understood the opposite.
Every moment with Grace brought him closer to the part of Isabella that still lived in the world.
He picked up her little elephant.
"Your mama would've loved watching you grow."
Grace laughed.
He kissed her forehead.
"I'm going to do better, sweetheart."
Then he looked toward the dark windows.
May you like
And wondered whether Clara would ever believe him.
