The Day Vanessa Lost Control of the Story

Chapter 13 - The Day Vanessa Lost Control of the Story

The public narrative began changing after official records and legal proceedings made some of the allegations harder to dismiss.

Vanessa had spent weeks portraying herself as a misunderstood mother.

But as investigators gathered evidence, witnesses came forward.

Olivia described her experience.

Caroline provided records for review.

Mom gave a detailed statement.

And the medical evidence documented injuries consistent with the incident I had witnessed.

Vanessa continued disputing many allegations through her attorney.

She was entitled to defend herself.

But I stopped trying to defend her reputation.

I had spent years smoothing over her behavior.

Explaining away rude remarks.

Making excuses for how she treated Mom.

Telling myself she was merely stressed.

Now I understood that protecting someone's image could become a way of abandoning the people they harmed.

One morning, Anthony visited.

He sat across from me in my office.

"Marcus, I owe you an apology."

"For what?"

"I should've asked you what was happening instead of repeating what I heard."

I shrugged.

"You called. That's more than some people did."

He looked down.

"How's Lily?"

"Getting better."

"And Evelyn?"

"Still stubborn."

He laughed.

"Good."

Then his expression grew serious.

"Do you need anything?"

I thought about that.

The old me would have said no.

I could handle it.

I always handled everything.

Instead, I said, "Actually, yeah."

"What?"

"Come over Sunday. Lily misses Uncle Anthony."

He smiled.

"I'll bring ice cream."

"Strawberry."

"I remember."

For the first time in weeks, I felt something other than exhaustion.

I felt supported.
