The Dinner Party That Exposed Everything

Chapter 07 - The Dinner Party That Exposed Everything

Vanessa had spent years constructing a public image.

Beautiful wife.

Devoted mother.

Generous philanthropist.

She chaired fundraising events for children's hospitals and posed for photographs beside donation checks.

Her social media was filled with inspirational quotes about motherhood.

And now she was telling our friends that I had suffered a breakdown.

I learned this when my longtime friend Anthony called.

"Marcus, what's going on?"

"What have you heard?"

He hesitated.

"Vanessa says you became violent and took Lily away."

I sat back.

"Did she mention my mother?"

"She said Evelyn had an accident."

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Anthony continued.

"Listen, I've known you twenty years. I don't believe you'd hurt your family. But people are talking."

I looked at the framed photograph of Lily on my desk.

"Let them talk. I'm focused on keeping my daughter safe."

That Saturday, Vanessa attended the Hollands' charity dinner without me.

A public event photographer captured her wearing a red evening gown, smiling beside Chicago's social elite.

Later that night, she posted a photograph with the caption:

A mother's love remains strong, even when others try to tear her family apart.

Hundreds of supportive comments followed.

Then Olivia saw the post.

She called me.

"Marcus, I know you don't want a public fight. But she's telling everyone you're the abuser."

I rubbed my forehead.

"Sarah's handling it."

"I understand."

She paused.

"But something happened at the fundraiser."

"What?"

"A woman messaged me. Her name is Caroline Price. She used to work for Vanessa."

I sat upright.

"What did she say?"

"That she's willing to talk."

Caroline had served as Vanessa's personal assistant before Lily was born.

According to Olivia, Caroline claimed that Vanessa had pressured employees to conceal financial transactions and had threatened anyone who questioned her.

Sarah arranged a meeting.

Caroline arrived carrying a leather folder.

"I should have come forward years ago," she said.

She placed a collection of emails on the table.

Some concerned unexplained payments.

Others involved requests to alter dates on invoices.

One mentioned Daniel Mercer by name.

Sarah reviewed the material carefully.

"These may be relevant, but we'll need to authenticate them."

Caroline nodded.

"I understand."

Then she looked at me.

"Mr. Bennett, there's something else you should know."

"What?"

"Your wife was angry about your mother's inheritance."

I frowned.

"Mom doesn't have much money."

Caroline hesitated.

"That's not what Vanessa believed."

She opened the folder again.

Inside was a photograph of an old legal letter.

The letter referenced an estate belonging to my mother's late aunt.

Aunt Josephine.

I remembered her vaguely.

She'd died several years earlier.

"What does this have to do with Vanessa?"

Caroline pointed to a highlighted paragraph.

"Vanessa thought Evelyn was about to inherit property in South Carolina."

I stared at the letter.

"Why would she care?"

Caroline's expression darkened.

May you like

"Because she believed the property was worth millions."
