The Father I Chose to Become

Chapter 18 - The Father I Chose to Become
Six months after that terrible afternoon, I made the biggest decision of my professional life.
I stepped down from day-to-day management of Bennett Commercial Properties.
I remained involved as an owner and adviser, but I appointed Nathan to oversee daily operations.
My partners were surprised.
A few thought I was throwing away opportunities.
One asked whether I was making an emotional decision.
I smiled.
"Of course it's emotional. My daughter is four years old."
He didn't know what to say.
For years, I'd believed love could be measured in what I provided.
A big house.
Expensive vacations.
Private schools.
Savings accounts.
I still believed financial stability mattered.
But Lily had taught me something more important.
A child doesn't know the value of a luxury penthouse.
A child knows who comes when she cries.
A child knows whose hand reaches for hers in a dark room.
A child knows whether home feels safe.
Our days became simpler.
I made breakfast.
I took Lily to preschool.
I learned how to braid hair by watching tutorials and asking Olivia for help.
I attended parent meetings.
I sat through entire performances of preschool songs without checking my phone.
At night, Mom often joined us for dinner.
Sometimes Lily spilled water.
Sometimes she refused vegetables.
Sometimes she got angry because her favorite socks were in the laundry.
She was a normal child.
And normal childhood was the greatest gift I could offer her.
One afternoon, she became frustrated while trying to tie her shoes.
She threw one sneaker across the room.
Then froze.
I watched her.
She watched me.
I sat beside her.
"Having a hard time?"
She nodded.
"Want help?"
Another nod.
I picked up the sneaker.
"Okay. Let's try together."
She leaned against my shoulder.
Then she whispered, "Daddy, you never yell when I'm learning."
I swallowed.
"I'm trying not to."
She smiled.
"You're learning too."
I laughed softly.
May you like
"Yeah, baby. I am."
