The Woman Who Wanted the House

Chapter 14 - The Woman Who Wanted the House
Vanessa had not entered Salvatore's life as an obvious enemy. She was charming, attentive, and extraordinarily good at making lonely people feel understood. In the months after Elena's death, she had volunteered at a family fundraiser, delivered meals to the estate, and listened while Salvatore talked about how much he missed his wife.
He mistook that attention for kindness. Only later did he recognize how often Vanessa framed closeness as a demand for control. She suggested changing the staff, intercepting calls, and restricting Nicholas's visits with Elena's relatives. Whenever Salvatore hesitated, she reminded him that he didn't know how to raise a child alone.
The financial review revealed that Vanessa had benefited from several questionable consulting agreements involving Dominic's network. The findings did not automatically establish her involvement in Elena's death or prove intent behind the staircase incident. But they gave investigators additional leads and undermined the image of a disinterested stepmother.
Through counsel Vanessa continued denying wrongdoing. Salvatore stopped reading the gossip coverage. He let the evidence and proper proceedings speak.
At Nicholas's therapy session, the boy was invited to draw a house. He drew a small cottage with a blue roof, a dog, a tree, and two people holding hands.
“Is that the estate?” Salvatore asked later.
“No,” Nicholas said. “That's the house where nobody needs to whisper.”
Salvatore looked at the drawing for a long time. Then he asked his son whether he would like to help choose a new place to live.
Nicholas's eyes widened. “Can we have a yellow kitchen?”
“We can look for one.”
“And a door that opens?”

“Every door you need will open.”
The boy took his hand. The empire had never felt smaller, or the promise more important.
