The Letter from Elena

Chapter 19 - The Letter from Elena
As the estate records were cataloged, Dana found an envelope Elena had addressed to Nicholas's father but never mailed. It was not evidence of a crime. It was a personal letter written during a tense period of their marriage, months before the fire.
Salvatore opened it in the yellow kitchen.
*Sal,* it began, *you keep saying you're building a future for us. I believe you. But sometimes it feels as though we're waiting for you to arrive at the life you're working so hard to create.*
He read the sentence twice. Elena had never been timid about telling him the truth. He had loved that about her and sometimes resented it.
*I don't need you to win every argument or buy us another beautiful room. Nicholas needs to know the sound of your laugh. He needs you to watch him build things that fall apart and tell him it's okay to try again. So do I.*
There was no dramatic accusation. Only a woman asking her husband to come home while there was still time.
Salvatore wept at the kitchen table. Then he folded the letter and placed it beside the photographs he hoped Nicholas would one day choose to keep.
That afternoon they planted a young pear tree in the yard. Nicholas insisted on doing most of the digging. The hole was crooked, and the soil stained his shoes.
“Is Mommy going to know it's for her?” he asked.
“I think remembering her is one way we keep loving her.”
Nicholas pushed the last clump of soil around the roots. “Then we'll remember her whenever it grows pears.”
Salvatore smiled. “That's a good plan.”
The boy took his hand. “Daddy, will you still be here when it's big?”
Salvatore looked at the fragile branches. He could not promise the world would never change. But he could promise what he intended to do with the days given to him.

“I'll do everything I can to be here to see it with you.”
Nicholas nodded, satisfied by an answer that sounded like the truth.
