The Courtroom Without a Crown

Chapter 17 - The Courtroom Without a Crown

In the criminal proceedings over Nicholas's fall, Vanessa's account faced the testimony of witnesses, medical evidence, and available video from a foyer camera that showed her position at the top of the staircase. The footage was imperfect, but it undermined essential parts of her claim that Nicholas fell before she touched him.

Vanessa eventually entered a plea to an assault offense under an agreement approved by the court. Sentencing included supervision, treatment requirements, and restrictions protecting Nicholas. The family court maintained arrangements designed around the child's welfare and professional assessments.

Salvatore did not celebrate. Nicholas had been hurt, and no judgment could undo that. He did, however, feel relief that the event had been addressed through evidence rather than through his own power.

Elena's death remained the subject of a separate investigation. Financial proceedings against individuals and companies connected to the freight transactions continued. Some claims were resolved; others were contested. Not every question received an answer.

Outside the courthouse, a reporter asked Salvatore whether he would take revenge on Vanessa and Dominic.

“No,” Salvatore said. “My son has seen enough of adults using fear to get what they want. Our family is focusing on safety and healing.”

He declined further questions and went home.

Nicholas was building a cardboard spaceship in the living room. “Did you beat the bad guys?” he asked.

Salvatore knelt beside him. “People were held responsible for what the court could prove. And there's more work for the investigators. But today, I'm just happy to be home.”

Nicholas handed him a cardboard helmet. “Good. We need another astronaut.”

They spent the afternoon exploring imaginary planets. No one asked Salvatore to be a feared boss. He was simply Dad.
