The Secret Beneath the Star

Chapter 10 - The Secret Beneath the Star

The memory card contained more than the recording. The technical extraction produced a folder of scanned invoices, corporate correspondence, and a draft letter Gabriel had written to independent counsel. Its central claim was not that Vincent had caused the accident. It was that Gabriel had discovered a long-running scheme siphoning money from legitimate freight accounts through fabricated subcontracting work.

Gabriel had also preserved a photograph of Vincent and Damon Calder meeting beside a warehouse outside Milwaukee. The picture was dated four days before Gabriel died.

At first, Angelo could not understand why his son had concealed the evidence in a child's toy. Then Sofia explained.

"He was afraid somebody would search every computer and safe in the house. He thought they would never look inside Matteo's airplane."

She looked at the little plane on the desk.

"And he trusted that you would recognize the star."

Angelo remembered Gabriel at eight years old, asking him to carve a star on a model he'd made together. It had become their private signature, added to every wooden toy that passed between them.

Gabriel had left the most important clue where only someone who loved him would think to look.

The discovery hurt Angelo almost as much as the accusation against Vincent. He had known the signature. He simply hadn't been there to notice it.

Meanwhile, the review of Sofia's disappearance led to evidence that she'd been confined under threats at a property controlled through Calder's network. Her account was corroborated by a caretaker who had helped her escape and kept contemporaneous notes.

Authorities began pursuing charges relating to her unlawful confinement while separate investigators examined financial crimes.

One night, Sofia found Angelo staring at Gabriel's photograph.

"He believed you could change," she said.

Angelo looked up. "Did he?"

"That's why he kept trying to tell you the truth. He thought you could choose the family over the business."

Angelo sat for a long time.

Then he called his attorneys and began the complicated process of separating himself and the legitimate family companies from criminal associates. He knew there would be legal consequences for his own past. He would not ask anyone to hide them.

The next morning, Matteo woke to find his grandfather at the kitchen table making pancakes with Sofia.

"Nonno cooks?" the boy asked, astonished.

Sofia laughed. "Apparently he's learning."

Angelo held up an oddly shaped pancake.

"Airplane," he announced.

Matteo stared at it. "That's a potato."

May you like

All three began laughing.

For the first time, the house sounded like a place where a child might grow up happily.
