The Workshop Door

Chapter 03 - The Workshop Door

Gabriel's workshop stood behind the greenhouse, separate from the estate's main building. He had built furniture there, repaired antique radios, and carved toys for the son he adored. When he died, Celia had insisted the place be locked because the smell of varnish upset Matteo.

Angelo returned with Rafael and a locksmith after the hospital confirmed Matteo was stable and safe under supervised care. He brought the wooden plane in a padded box, careful not to alter anything that could matter as evidence.

Inside, dust covered the workbench. The tools hung in precise rows, exactly as Gabriel had left them. On one shelf stood a half-finished rocking horse. A handwritten note taped to its neck read, FOR MATTEO WHEN HE'S BIG ENOUGH.

Angelo sat on a stool and struggled to breathe.

Gabriel had been his eldest son and the one person who could still tell Angelo when he was wrong without being punished. He'd studied engineering, disliked the family's illicit businesses, and spent his final years trying to separate legitimate Caruso companies from the shadow operations that financed them.

"I'm going to make the name mean something else," Gabriel had promised.

Angelo had dismissed it as youthful idealism.

Now the promise sounded like a warning he had ignored.

Rafael photographed the room. Beneath a locked cabinet they found a notebook with pages torn out. The last surviving entry was dated the afternoon before Gabriel's crash: IF ANYTHING HAPPENS, SOFIA KNOWS ABOUT THE STAR.

Angelo looked again at the tiny burned star under Matteo's plane.

A forensic technician later examined the toy with the family's consent and documented the new seam. Inside was a miniature memory card wrapped in protective film. It was not opened on Angelo's personal computer; Rafael arranged a controlled extraction and preserved the original.

That evening, a preliminary copy of the files appeared on a secure screen.

The first was an audio message from Gabriel.

"Sofia," his voice said, calm but tired, "if you're listening to this, it means I couldn't get these records to the attorneys. Vincent is moving money through the Northline contracts. I think he's using our father's businesses to cover it. I've copied the account ledgers. The board needs to see them."

Angelo pressed his hand to his mouth.

Then Gabriel continued. "And if anything happens to me, protect Matteo. Don't trust the accident report until it's independently checked."

For one moment Angelo saw his son as he had been at twelve, racing down the hallway holding a model plane, demanding to know whether a man could fly without wings.

He had listened to Gabriel's business advice too late.

The final file was a short video. Sofia stood in the workshop, bruised and visibly frightened.

"Angelo, if this reaches you, please believe me. Gabriel found out Vincent is working with someone named Calder. They threatened to take Matteo if we spoke. I'm going to protect our boy."

She looked toward a noise outside the room.

Then whispered, "Your other son knows exactly what happened to Gabriel."
