The Hearing

Chapter 14 - The Hearing
The child-endangerment proceedings involving Celia were difficult for everyone. Angelo had wanted the courtroom to deliver a simple truth: she had harmed Matteo, and someone would say so publicly. The process was slower and more careful than that.
Medical records documented the child's exposure to the cold. Footage and witness statements established the timeline as far as the evidence allowed. Celia's account was assessed alongside the other evidence.
Sofia sat in the back row, holding a small notebook in her lap. Angelo sat beside her. Matteo did not attend; the adults and professionals involved had agreed that he should not be exposed to a public confrontation unnecessarily.
At a later stage, Celia entered a guilty plea to an offense related to endangering the child's welfare. The court imposed penalties and restrictions appropriate to the case, including requirements intended to prevent further harm.
When the hearing ended, a reporter approached Angelo outside.
"Mr. Caruso, what do you want to say to your former daughter-in-law?"
Angelo looked at the cameras. "Nothing that belongs on television. A child was harmed. Our responsibility is to help him recover."
He walked away.
That evening Matteo was making paper snowflakes at the dining table. He held one up proudly.
"This one's like the ones that fell on me."
Angelo hesitated, unsure whether to respond.
Sofia sat beside the child. "What do you remember about that night?"
Matteo looked down. "I was scared."
"Of course you were."
"Then Nonno came."
Angelo felt his throat tighten.
Matteo placed the paper snowflake on the table. "I don't like the cold at night."
"We don't have to go out in it," Sofia said.
"Can snow be fun in the day?"
Angelo smiled. "It can. When you're dressed warmly and somebody stays with you."
The boy seemed to think about that for a long time.
"Maybe someday," he said.
Angelo nodded. He wouldn't rush him.
After Matteo went to bed, Rafael called. The investigation into Calder's financial network had widened, and authorities were preparing additional charges against several participants. Vincent's role remained contested.

Angelo looked toward the staircase where Matteo had just disappeared with his stuffed bear.
He wanted justice for Gabriel and Sofia. But the night's greatest victory was simpler: Matteo had started to imagine a future in which snow might mean play instead of punishment.
