The Name on the Birth Certificate

Chapter 14 - The Name on the Birth Certificate
A specialist reviewing archival records found the first decisive document: a certified birth record for a girl born to Margaret Romano in March 1999. It contained a hospital identifier corresponding to Laura Hart's journal and a sealed amended record issued several months later.
The paperwork didn't explain every step of Evelyn's childhood. It did support the family connection independently of the locket and photographs. An accredited test subsequently confirmed a close biological relationship with Rose, consistent with Rose being her maternal aunt.
Evelyn sat in Simone's conference room holding copies of the findings.
“So Laura wasn't my biological mother,” she whispered.
“That's what the available evidence indicates,” Simone answered gently. “It doesn't change her legal or emotional role in your life.”
Evelyn laughed once through tears. “She used to leave notes in my lunchbox. Every day, even when I was sixteen and begged her to stop.”
Rose reached across the table. “Margaret couldn't have chosen a better person to keep you safe.”
Evelyn looked at the two names on the documents. A biological mother who'd lost her life before they could know each other. A mother who'd chosen her and spent the rest of her life proving it.
There was room in her heart for both.

Then the records revealed an unsettling detail. The original birth documents had been requested years earlier by an agent for Marconi Capital. The request date corresponded to the period when Celeste first began dating Dante.
Evelyn leaned forward. “So they knew about me before I knew about them?”
“Someone sought information,” Simone replied. “We still need to establish what they learned and why.”
Dante grew silent. Celeste had entered his household as a poised woman who admired his mother and claimed to value family. Had that affection always been part of a plan to reach Rose's assets and Margaret's missing heirs?
He wanted to believe the worst, because anger offered a simple answer. Simone wouldn't allow it.
“Proof first,” she said.

Across the table, Rose squeezed Evelyn's hand. “Whatever happened before, no one gets to decide your future without you.”
Evelyn held the birth certificate against her chest. For the first time in her life, the words on a page told her more about where she came from than she'd ever dared to ask.
