Laura Hart's Last Promise

Chapter 07 - Laura Hart's Last Promise
Evelyn had spent eleven years avoiding the locked drawer in her mother's old dresser. It held unpaid hospital bills, a wedding photograph, and a thick journal wrapped in a dish towel. Laura had asked her not to open it until she felt ready.
Now Evelyn brought it to Rose's living room.
The early pages chronicled two young women's friendship. Margaret Romano had fled an overbearing family and found work at a small theater where Laura made costumes. When Margaret became pregnant, Laura accompanied her to appointments and promised to help raise the child if needed.
Then the entries changed.
A businessman was demanding access to Margaret's inheritance. Her former partner had disappeared. Someone warned Laura to stop asking questions. Finally, a page dated March 1999 said: Margaret made me promise that if danger came, I'd keep the baby safe. I won't fail her.
Evelyn looked up. “I was born that spring.”
Rose covered her mouth.
Dante asked gently, “May I see?”
She handed him the journal. In a later entry, Laura wrote that Margaret had died after a sudden illness, but no hospital or funeral was identified. Laura had changed surnames and moved north with the infant.
“It explains why she never spoke about her own relatives,” Evelyn whispered. “She wasn't pretending I was hers to steal me. She was trying to keep a promise.”
Rose held her hand. “She loved you.”
“I know.” Evelyn cried. “I just wish she had known she could tell me.”
Dante arranged independent research into the records with Evelyn's permission. He would not treat her history as a family possession merely because his name appeared in it.

That night, Anthony identified the sedan outside Rose's brownstone. It belonged to a security company contracted by Marconi Capital, a firm partly owned by Celeste's father.
Dante didn't call his men to settle it. He called Simone.

“Preserve the photographs, vehicle information, and correspondence,” she said. “We need a clean record.”
Then Rose phoned, her voice trembling. “Dante, I remember Dominic Marconi. He came to see Margaret shortly before she disappeared. And Celeste's been asking for the same cedar chest since last winter.”
