A Photograph with Two Mothers

Chapter 04 - A Photograph with Two Mothers

Evelyn met Rose in the hospital sunroom. She brought the photograph from her mother's tin and placed it beside Rose's picture. The elderly woman gasped.

“Laura,” she whispered.

“You knew my mother?”

Rose took a long breath. “I knew her as Margaret's best friend. She was there when Margaret gave birth.”

Evelyn's heart hammered. “My mother told me I was born in Albany.”

“Perhaps you were.” Rose touched her hand. “I don't want to make promises based on pictures. But I have been looking for my sister's daughter for many years.”

Dante watched quietly from the doorway. For once, he did not interrupt a conversation to solve it.

Rose explained that her younger sister, Margaret Romano, had vanished after a bitter family dispute nearly thirty years earlier. She had become pregnant by a man the family disapproved of. Rose had secretly supported her. Then letters stopped coming. Their father claimed Margaret had moved abroad and wanted no contact.

“I believed him because I was afraid to challenge him,” Rose said. “By the time I tried, it was too late.”

Evelyn looked at her own photo. “Mom never told me any of this.”

“She may have been protecting someone. Or protecting you. We don't know yet.”

Rose produced a tiny envelope. Inside was half a locket, engraved with a letter M.

“My sister kept the other half,” she said.

Evelyn's breath caught. She wore a tarnished pendant under her blouse, a keepsake Laura had given her shortly before dying. When she unfastened it and laid it beside Rose's, the two uneven edges fit together.

Dante slowly sat down.

“That still doesn't settle who your parents are,” he said carefully, “but someone intended these pieces to remain connected.”

Evelyn wiped her cheeks. “Then I want the truth. Not the version somebody decided I could live with.”

Rose took her hand. “So do I, sweetheart.”

That evening Dante received a message from Celeste: a scanned guardianship petition alleging Rose was unable to manage her finances. It was dated two weeks earlier and listed Dante as a supporting family member.
