The Lie That Cost Her Job

Chapter 11 - The Lie That Cost Her Job
By lunchtime, the rumor had spread among the restaurant staff. Sophie was accused of taking a valuable family heirloom. The manager suspended her while he reviewed the complaint, despite the absence of proof.
She sat outside the employee entrance, staring at her apron folded in her lap. It wasn't her first unfair accusation, but it landed differently now. She had finally begun believing she could help find Elena without losing every ordinary thing that kept her life steady.
Luca offered to hire an attorney. Sophie accepted independent legal guidance, not a private payment in exchange for silence. Her lawyer requested the complaint in writing and asked the restaurant to preserve its footage and employment records.
The allegation centered on the silver star necklace. Rocco claimed it belonged to the Romano family and had been removed from the estate.
Sophie photographed an old family album showing Elena wearing the pendant years before she met Luca. Teresa also produced a gift receipt from the small jewelry shop where she'd bought the two sisters matching stars.
"It's mine," Sophie told her attorney. "It was never theirs to take."
Within days, the restaurant reinstated her. Brenda apologized, and Sophie returned to work by choice, not necessity. She wanted to finish the season while deciding what she would do next.
At the end of her shift she found Luca waiting outside—not with bodyguards crowding the entrance, but alone near a streetlamp.
"I wanted to apologize," he said.
"For what? You weren't the one who made the complaint."
"I built a world where people thought accusing someone like you would make a problem disappear."
Sophie looked at him. "An apology is a start. It isn't a new world."

He nodded. "Then I'll keep working."
She went home without inviting him to follow.
