The Letter to a Lost Year

Chapter 17 - The Letter to a Lost Year
Elena wrote Gabriel a letter on the anniversary of the day she'd disappeared. He was too young to understand it now, so she sealed it in an envelope for when he was older.
*I left because I thought staying would put you in danger,* she wrote. *I wanted to protect you, but there is no way to give back the days we missed. I am sorry for every bedtime when you reached for me and I wasn't there. I hope you always know that none of it was because you weren't loved.*
She showed the letter to Luca.
He read it and cried.
"He'll know," Luca said.
"I hope so."
"We'll tell him the truth in ways he can understand. We won't make him carry our shame."
Elena nodded. They'd begun family counseling, not as a shortcut back to marriage but as a way to cooperate and repair their parenting relationship. Some sessions were difficult. Elena spoke about what it felt like to beg for belief and receive suspicion. Luca listened without explaining it away.

They remained separated. Gabriel spent time with both parents under a stable arrangement developed with professional guidance. Some friends treated that as a failure. Elena didn't.
A safe home, she had learned, wasn't defined by whether two adults shared a bedroom. It was defined by whether the child inside it felt loved and protected.
