The Door Left Open

Chapter 19 - The Door Left Open
Sophie received the call from Elena on a bright Sunday morning. "Can you come over?" her sister asked. "Nothing's wrong. I just want you here."
The three of them met at a small public park near the river. Elena brought a picnic basket. Luca came later with Gabriel, who arrived carrying a battered cloth rabbit by one ear.
Sophie sat on the grass with her sister while the boy played a few yards away.
"You're happy," Elena observed.
Sophie considered the question. Work was tiring, rent was still rent, and some nights she woke from dreams of bodyguards standing in a restaurant doorway. But she had a job that respected her, a sister she'd believed lost, and friends she could call when life became hard.
"I am," she said.
Elena leaned against her shoulder. "Me too. Not every day. But more of them."
Luca approached after Gabriel fell asleep in his stroller. He and Elena exchanged a glance that Sophie couldn't quite read. There was affection there, and pain, and careful boundaries.
"We've decided not to make promises about what our marriage will become," Elena said. "We're taking care of Gabriel and ourselves. That's enough for now."
Sophie nodded. She was proud of them for choosing honesty over a dramatic reconciliation that neither was ready for.

Gabriel stirred and reached one sleepy hand toward his mother. Elena took it. Luca tucked the blanket around his feet.
Sophie watched the small circle of care form around the child and realized that this—not fear, not reputation, not control—was what family was supposed to look like.
