The Warehouse Ledgers

Chapter 12 - The Warehouse Ledgers
Matteo discovered that Rocco had used a shuttered warehouse as an unofficial records archive. Rather than raid it privately, Luca's counsel reported the information to investigators and helped secure relevant business documents through lawful procedures.
The recovered ledgers pointed to inflated invoices, diverted charity funds, and payments to intermediaries. Some names belonged to legitimate businesses; others were fronts that existed only on paper. Forensic accountants began reconstructing the flow of money.
Elena recognized one name immediately: Bernard Kessler, the accountant who had told her she was mistaken when she noticed irregularities months before disappearing.
Kessler had since left Chicago. Investigators located him living in Florida. Through counsel he offered an account of Rocco's instructions, supported by files he had retained.
Luca read the summary with a familiar mix of fury and remorse. Rocco had been able to act because Luca trusted family relationships more than proper oversight.
Sophie called that evening to ask how Elena was doing. Luca told her the truth about his own role.
"I signed away oversight because I was busy," he said. "I wanted the business handled while I took care of other things."
"And now?"
"Now I understand that being responsible means knowing what you're responsible for."
Sophie smiled sadly. "My mother used to say the same thing about a pot of soup. You can't leave it on the stove all day and blame the fire when it burns."
Luca laughed for the first time in weeks.

Then he looked toward the nursery. Gabriel was asleep, both hands resting on the cloth rabbit Elena had given him.
For the first time, the house felt less like a fortress and more like a place a child might eventually call home.
