The Ledger's Missing Pages

Chapter 11 - The Ledger's Missing Pages

One evening, Helen called Adrian with bad news. Several pages from Eleanor's ledger referenced accounts not yet identified. The box contained copies rather than complete originals, and one former trustee had died. Without the missing records, the investigation might never explain where some of the foundation's money went.

Adrian asked June whether Marian remembered a second set of papers. Marian did: Eleanor had kept a small notebook in a green leather case. It vanished from her study just before her death. Victoria had organized the estate inventory.

The discovery made June angry, but Helen cautioned everyone against treating suspicion as proof. They requested inventory logs and interviewed the archivist who cataloged Eleanor's possessions. The archivist remembered a green case listed among items transferred to a storage unit owned by the foundation.

The unit was still rented. Inside were boxes of old gala programs, photographs, and office furniture. Beneath a framed portrait lay the case. It had a broken clasp. The notebook remained inside.

Eleanor had recorded meetings, dates, and her concerns about directors attempting to redirect charitable money. The entries did not establish criminal guilt, but they helped investigators reconstruct a timeline. One entry mentioned Daniel Parker by name and stated: “He refused to sign. Protect his family.”

Marian touched the sentence with trembling fingers. “She knew.”

June felt conflicting emotions. Eleanor had cared, but she had not been able to stop the separation of her parents. Adrian looked at the notebook and said, “My grandmother tried to build safeguards. We let people dismantle them.”

He decided the foundation would publish a fuller account of its failures once verified. June warned him not to make the report a story about his personal redemption. “The residents lived with the consequences,” she said.

“I know,” he answered. “They should speak first.”
