A Different Kind of Invitation

Chapter 12 - A Different Kind of Invitation

With the investigation underway and Harbor House repairs progressing, June began rebuilding a future she had postponed for years. Marian's recovery improved, Daniel found steady work designing accessibility upgrades, and June reduced her shifts enough to enroll in an evening architecture program.

Adrian asked whether she'd accompany him to a fundraising dinner—this time as his guest. She hesitated. Another ballroom, another expensive gown, another crowd that might measure her worth by a label.

“I don't own a dress,” she said.

“You don't need to buy one.”

“That's not the point.”

He listened. She explained how quickly she had become a symbol online: the brave waitress, the poor girl, the person everyone wanted to reward or rescue. Almost nobody had asked what she wanted to become. Adrian apologized for approaching the invitation as though a pleasant evening would erase that imbalance.

They went instead to a public architecture lecture. June took notes and asked fierce questions. Adrian watched her speak to the presenter afterward, animated in a way he'd never seen at the hotel. At dinner in a crowded diner, she told him about her plan to design safe, beautiful homes for families who couldn't afford architects.

“You could do extraordinary work,” he said.

“I plan to.”

He laughed, delighted by her certainty.

Over the following months, their friendship became something warmer. They set boundaries carefully. June no longer worked at any Bellamy-owned hotel; she'd taken an office job at an independent architecture practice. Adrian was no longer in a position to influence her employment. They let trust grow through being on time, keeping promises, and disagreeing without fear.

One evening, walking beside the river, Adrian took her hand. He waited until she closed her fingers around his. It was a small gesture. After everything the ballroom had taught her, it felt enormous.
