Victoria's Last Performance

Chapter 13 - Victoria's Last Performance
Victoria returned to the public stage at a charity luncheon, determined to restore her reputation. She called the allegations a misunderstanding and accused the foundation board of using her as a scapegoat. But the independent audit was nearing completion, and records showed substantial payments to Graham's company without adequate evidence of services performed.
Her attorney advised silence. Victoria ignored him. She claimed to have personally rescued Harbor House from financial failure. Tessa responded with a public statement signed by residents, describing the proposed eviction notices and the subsequent repair process.
Adrian refused invitations to debate Victoria on television. June supported that decision. “This isn't a contest to see who can make the meanest speech.”
The audit led to civil recovery proceedings and referrals for review of potentially fraudulent filings. Graham agreed to return certain funds as part of a negotiated settlement without admitting every allegation. Victoria continued disputing responsibility. The legal process moved slowly, with hearings, document requests, and decisions nobody could script.
At a later proceeding, June gave testimony about the gala confrontation and the document she showed. She spoke plainly. Victoria had struck her. June had preserved the trust copy. The key had opened the bank box. She didn't guess at motives she couldn't prove.
Outside the courthouse, Victoria approached her. “You think you've won?”
June looked at the woman whose slap once made her feel small. “This was never a game.”
“You took my life away.”

“No,” June said. “You made decisions. Other people are finally allowed to ask about them.”
June walked away without raising her voice. The satisfaction was quieter than revenge and lasted longer.
