The House with the Wide Windows

Chapter 18 - The House with the Wide Windows
Three years after the gala, June graduated from her architecture program. Marian and Daniel sat together in the front row. Tessa cheered louder than anyone. Adrian stood at the back, holding flowers that he had chosen himself rather than asked an assistant to order.
June's first major project was a partnership with a nonprofit developer to create affordable transitional apartments. She designed wide windows, accessible entrances, shared gardens, and rooms that felt like places people could grow rather than temporary holding areas.
At the groundbreaking, a journalist asked whether she'd been inspired by the infamous gala. June smiled. “I was inspired by people who needed homes long before that night.”
Adrian was one of several donors, but he had no authority over the design. He respected that boundary. When June disagreed with the budget committee about removing the shared courtyard, she presented research, rallied tenants, and won the argument on its merits.
After the ceremony, Adrian took her to dinner at a small restaurant overlooking the river. He seemed unusually nervous. She noticed immediately.
“Did you lose another contract?”
“No.”
“Did you break something expensive?”
“No.”
He laughed and took a small box from his pocket. June went still.
“Before you answer,” he said, “I want you to know that you don't owe me anything. Not because I helped the foundation. Not because I love you. You can say no, and I will still respect the life you've built.”
He opened the box. Inside was a simple ring with a small blue stone.
“June Parker, would you marry me?”
May you like
She stared at him for a long, tender moment. Then she said, “Yes. But we're not inviting Victoria.”
Adrian laughed so hard that the waiter turned around.
