What the Road Remembered

Chapter 11 - What the Road Remembered
The crash investigation had been closed years earlier. Reopening it required more than suspicions. Detective Castillo obtained the original collision report, service records, and witness interviews. Specialists examined what physical evidence remained and identified inconsistencies that deserved further inquiry.
Adrian wanted an immediate arrest. His attorney warned him against influencing witnesses. He spent the afternoon pacing the modest rented kitchen while Lucy colored a picture of a dog.
“You're stomping,” she said.
He stopped. “Sorry, pumpkin.”
“Are you mad at my crayons?”

Rose began spending longer periods with Lucy. She and Adrian discussed co-parenting without pretending their marriage could simply resume. Too much had happened. Both wanted their daughter safe, but they needed to rebuild trust separately from romance.
The investigators found a mechanic who remembered unusual requests from Leon's firm. He couldn't prove sabotage, but his statement helped establish the chain of custody for vehicle service records.

A few days later Leon's lawyer contacted the detective. Leon wanted to surrender and tell his account. He claimed Vivian had paid him to arrange a staged accident, but he'd never intended anyone to be injured.
**Whether that story was true would depend on evidence he could produce—and one document he said Adrian himself had signed.**
