The Signature in Black Ink

Chapter 12 - The Signature in Black Ink

Leon produced a contract bearing Adrian's signature. It purported to authorize a security operation against an unnamed threat to the family. Vivian had allegedly used it as cover to pay her contractor.

Adrian stared at the document. “I never agreed to endanger Rose.”

His attorney checked the signature and approval history. Months before the crash, Adrian had authorized a broad security budget without carefully reviewing the attached work orders. His approval was real; the later descriptions of the work were disputed.

“I signed something I didn't understand,” he said.

“That matters,” his attorney answered. “It doesn't prove you ordered what happened, but you have to be truthful about what you approved.”

Adrian gave investigators his records and acknowledged his negligence. He stopped delegating every unpleasant responsibility and began reviewing the systems he'd used to avoid accountability.

Rose was furious when she learned of the contract. “You let Vivian handle everything because questioning her was uncomfortable.”

He didn't defend himself. “Yes.”

“And Lucy paid for it.”

“I know.”

She left before he could say more. Their reconciliation, whatever form it took, was going to take years, not one apology.

I watched Adrian stand at the kitchen sink that night, staring at nothing. I wanted to comfort him. Instead I asked whether he'd eaten. He shook his head. I handed him a plate, then went home. Kindness didn't require me to absorb his pain.

The financial inquiry soon showed that much of the stolen charity money had passed through accounts linked to Vivian and Leon. Investigators also discovered additional witnesses who had been pressured to remain silent.

**But before the court hearings began, Vivian sent Lucy a gift—and the note inside nearly undid months of healing.**
