The Woman Who Signed Everything

Chapter 09 - The Woman Who Signed Everything

Vivian had managed the Bellandi estate for years through powers of attorney, staff contracts, and accounts Adrian rarely checked. That authority had let her conceal expenses and manufacture convincing explanations. But she had left a trail: payments to a clinic, a private driver, and a security contractor hired during the months after the crash.

Mrs. Finch requested a meeting with police. She admitted she'd known Lucy was alive for nearly a year. Vivian had claimed the girl was being protected from someone dangerous and warned that any employee who spoke would lose both work and housing.

I felt anger when I learned this. I also remembered the guard by the study door and how frightened I'd been. Fear doesn't excuse every decision, but it explains why silence can spread so far.

Mrs. Finch apologized to Lucy's care team, then resigned. Her testimony helped investigators establish how the nursery had been concealed.

Adrian moved out of the mansion with Lucy. They rented a quieter house with a fenced yard and ordinary neighbors. He asked Lucy to choose the color of her bedroom walls. She picked yellow, the color of summer mornings. He painted one section badly, and she laughed at the drip on his sleeve.

I visited one Saturday to help them plant herbs. Adrian offered to fund my return to college. I refused the personal gift, but accepted information about a publicly administered scholarship program with no connection to his family.

“You don't have to repay me,” he said.

“Then don't make me dependent on you.”

He nodded. “Fair.”

A few days later, Vivian's former assistant provided investigators with a second storage location. Inside, they found boxes of charity invoices, falsified household records, and photographs of Rose entering the Wisconsin clinic under an alias.

**One photograph showed Vivian standing beside Rose's hospital bed—three months after Vivian had told Adrian his wife was dead.**
