The Woman in the Hospital Photograph

Chapter 04 - The Woman in the Hospital Photograph

The clue came from an old staff photograph. A nurse named Teresa Lowell had worked at a private recovery clinic shortly after the supposed accident. Vivian had paid the clinic for “extended custodial services,” a phrase that alarmed Detective Castillo when viewed alongside the questionable family records.

Teresa agreed to speak with police and, with her permission, later met Adrian and his attorney. She remembered a patient admitted under a different name: a young woman with a head injury who repeatedly asked about her daughter, Lucy.

“Was it Rose?” Adrian asked.

Teresa looked at the photographs. “I believe so. But I want the records checked before I tell you anything definite.”

Adrian gripped the table. “Where is she now?”

“The clinic closed. I helped her transfer to a rehabilitation center in Wisconsin. I don't know where she went afterward.”

The search led to scattered medical entries, incomplete discharge notes, and one address associated with a supported-living nonprofit. Adrian demanded to fly there immediately. His lawyer persuaded him to contact the organization first and respect Rose's right to decide who could visit.

Meanwhile, Vivian's attorney delivered a statement claiming that Lucy had been kept hidden for her own protection. Adrian read it once and pushed it away. No explanation could erase the child's terror or the months of confinement.

I found Lucy drawing at the kitchen table. She had made three stick figures beside a yellow house.

“Who's that?” I asked, pointing to the woman with long hair.

“Mommy. She sings the cloud song.”

I remembered the tune I'd heard in the upstairs hall. It wasn't the plumbing. It was Lucy singing to herself to remember her mother.

That evening, the Wisconsin nonprofit confirmed that a resident named Anna Bell had once used Rose's identifying information. The woman had moved out eight months earlier, leaving a forwarding contact with a volunteer named June.

**June said she would speak to Adrian—but only after she heard what had happened to Lucy.**
