A Name on the Emergency Call

Chapter 10 - A Name on the Emergency Call

The original emergency dispatch recording from the crash became available through the investigation. It began with Mara describing a collision, two damaged vehicles, and an injured man who needed urgent medical attention.

“Stay on the line,” the dispatcher said.

“I am,” Mara answered. “Please hurry.”

Then a distant male voice demanded that she give him her phone. Mara refused. Footsteps scuffed the wet shoulder of the road. She told the dispatcher the man had come from the other vehicle.

The voice shouted something the recording equipment didn't fully capture. Mara said one clear name: “Chad?”

Ethan listened twice. He knew Chad's voice well enough to recognize its cadence, but he wouldn't pretend an unclear recording was a conviction. Investigators arranged voice comparison and other corroboration.

Isabella sat with her hands over her mouth. “She saw him.”

“Maybe,” Naomi said gently. “We're going to establish what we can.”

That evening Ethan remembered a conversation from a week before the crash. Chad had suggested an unusually late meeting at a remote construction property. Ethan had declined and driven home on his usual route. Chad knew the route because he'd once borrowed Ethan's driver for business trips.

Ethan felt anger rising in his chest, but his first call was to his physical therapist. He needed to keep his routine rather than let the investigation consume every part of his life.

Afterward he phoned Isabella.

“I can't stop hearing Mara's voice,” he said.

“Neither can I.”

“I'm sorry I couldn't help her.”

“You were critically injured, Ethan. She helped you because she chose to.”

He looked at the night sky and realized that being saved wasn't a debt he could repay with money. He could honor Mara by refusing to abandon the search.
