The Surgery and the Promise

Chapter 17 - The Surgery and the Promise
Ben's long-awaited heart procedure took place in early spring. Hospital staff helped the family navigate insurance, specialist appointments and financial assistance. Ethan offered support but respected Isabella's decision to keep the medical process under her family's control.
The surgery went well, though Ben still faced recovery and follow-up care. When he was strong enough to joke, he asked whether the hospital would refund part of the bill because the food was terrible.
Mara laughed so hard she had to sit down. Isabella cried with relief. Ethan arrived with a paperback science-fiction novel and a puzzle Ben accused him of choosing because it was impossibly difficult.
Later, in the hospital garden, Isabella told Ethan she'd been accepted into a program to train as a hospitality operations manager. She'd earned the place through recommendations and interviews independent of his companies.
“I'm proud of you,” he said.
“I'm proud of me too.”
He laughed. “You should be.”
She took a breath. “I want us to be honest about something. You have money and influence. I don't want either of us pretending that difference vanishes because we like each other.”
“Agreed.”
“And I don't want to become someone whose plans orbit around yours.”
“Then don't. I'll make room for your plans.”
She studied him. “You're serious.”
“Very.”
They'd grown close over months of fear, testimony and shared laughter. Ethan knew attraction wasn't gratitude and gratitude wasn't love. He asked whether she wanted to go on a date—an actual date with no case files and no business discussion.

Isabella grinned. “Only if you promise not to buy the restaurant.”
“No promises,” he said, then laughed when she raised an eyebrow. “All right. I promise.”
