What Mara Remembered

Chapter 14 - What Mara Remembered
Mara recovered memories gradually, with professional support and without anyone pressuring her to supply answers. She remembered kneeling beside Ethan's wrecked car and hearing another vehicle approach. A man argued with a second man about a phone. Someone said the collision wasn't supposed to cause this much damage.
She remembered recognizing Chad from a charity event. She'd seen him in publicity photographs and heard him arguing with a contractor that afternoon. When she said his name aloud, one man grabbed her arm.
After that, her memory became fragmented: a wet sleeve over her face, headlights through trees, a motel room, a clinic, then months of confusion.
Detectives compared her account with dispatch audio, motel records, vehicle data and testimony from Daniel Price. Several details could be corroborated independently. Others remained uncertain, and the investigators were careful not to claim more than the evidence supported.
Chad's attorney denied his client's involvement in an intentional collision or unlawful detention. Brooke agreed to supply what she knew about the disputed documents and an argument she'd overheard concerning a damaged SUV.
Ethan told Mara he was sorry her life had been overturned because she helped him.
She shook her head. “You didn't make those people do anything.”
“I still wish I could have protected you.”
“You were trapped in a car. I was trying to get you out. That's all either of us could do.”
She reached for Isabella's hand. “I want us to stop living as though those men own the rest of our years.”

For Isabella, the words were both a relief and a challenge. Finding Mara didn't instantly heal the terror of losing her. Some nights she still woke expecting bad news. Mara sometimes needed silence, sometimes company, sometimes space. The sisters had to learn each other again.
That was how healing began: not with one extraordinary revelation, but with ordinary mornings when nobody disappeared.
