The Only Person Who Asked

Chapter 02 - The Only Person Who Asked
The room didn't learn the truth all at once. Ethan raised his hand and asked the executive, Samuel Cross, to wait. He refused to turn Isabella's grief into a spectacle merely to punish the people who had humiliated him.
“Your badge,” he said gently. “Keep it for now. No employment decision should be made in this room.”
The manager opened his mouth, but Samuel said, “He's right.”
Brooke took a step toward Ethan. “Who exactly is this man?”
Samuel looked at her. “The principal investor in the company that owns this hotel.”
A whisper traveled from table to table. Chad's jaw tightened. His recent campaign to remove Ethan from their former company's board had depended on persuading investors that Ethan couldn't work effectively since the crash. But Ethan's injury hadn't erased his judgment; he'd continued negotiating through a different investment vehicle while adapting to his mobility needs.
“That's impossible,” Chad said.
“No,” Ethan replied. “It's just information you weren't invited to have.”
The event director asked whether the gala should continue. Ethan said yes. The charity's beneficiaries hadn't done anything wrong. He requested a quiet room where Isabella could speak privately, provided she wished to. She hesitated, then agreed to meet the following day with her aunt present.
In the accessible guest suite upstairs, Ethan sat alone for ten minutes. Anger arrived after the performance ended. He wasn't angry because someone had seen him using a wheelchair. He was angry because Brooke had treated his autonomy as a joke and because so many supposedly honorable people had decided not to interfere.
Samuel entered. “The hotel's HR department is reviewing the manager's conduct.”
“Make sure Isabella isn't punished for speaking up. But do it properly. No special favors that leave her dependent on me.”
Samuel nodded. Then he handed Ethan a sealed envelope delivered to reception earlier that evening.

Inside was a photocopy of a traffic collision report. In blue ink, someone had circled a line near the bottom: Unidentified female witness departed before police arrival.
Beneath it were six handwritten words: SHE DID NOT LEAVE BY CHOICE.
