The Hearing That Changed the Room

Chapter 15 - The Hearing That Changed the Room
Legal proceedings unfolded over months. The criminal investigation examined the collision, witness interference and financial misconduct separately, and the corporate disputes proceeded through their own channels. Not every rumor became a charge. Not every accusation was proven. Ethan learned to value that distinction, however badly he wanted answers.
A court heard evidence concerning falsified authorizations and unlawful financial actions by Chad. Witnesses testified about the pressure placed on investors. Mara gave her account of what she remembered, with safeguards to accommodate her health. Daniel's testimony was tested against other records.
When Ethan was asked about his ability to manage his business after the crash, he answered without defensiveness.
“My injury changed how I move through the world. It did not transfer my judgment, my ownership rights or my dignity to another person.”
Isabella sat beside Mara, gripping her hand. Brooke sat several rows behind them, looking thinner and less certain than the woman in the burgundy gown.
After one hearing, a reporter asked whether Ethan planned to forgive Chad.
“That's not the question I'm focused on,” Ethan replied. “The facts and legal responsibility come first.”

The case concerning the company records resulted in findings against Chad, and some related criminal matters moved toward resolution. The full responsibility for the collision remained subject to the evidence and the legal process. Ethan did not claim the world had suddenly become fair.
But he could finally say this: the man who had tried to profit from portraying him as powerless had failed to take his life away from him.
