The Motel Receipt

Chapter 08 - The Motel Receipt

Naomi insisted they give the anonymous tip to investigators rather than rush to the motel. The motel's records, if still available, would require verification. The manager remembered very little about the rainy night six months earlier. But an old payment record showed a room paid for by a corporate card issued to Whitmore Logistics.

The room had been booked under an alias. Its guest had checked out just before dawn. A handwritten incident note mentioned a woman asking for a phone and a man telling the clerk she was his wife and needed rest.

Isabella went pale when she heard. “Mara was not married.”

The clerk, contacted by detectives, remembered that the woman had a small cut near her temple. He could not identify her with certainty from a photograph. He remembered her saying, “My sister will worry.”

Police began tracing the card, the alias and the vehicle seen at the motel. Ethan resisted the urge to send private guards to every address that emerged.

“I keep wanting to do something bigger,” he admitted to Isabella.

“Sometimes bigger isn't better,” she said. “Sometimes you need to let the right people do their jobs.”

He smiled. “You have an answer for everything.”

“No. If I did, I'd know where Mara is.”

The smile vanished. He reached across the table, then stopped, allowing her to choose whether she wanted his hand. She took it.

That simple gesture mattered more than either expected. Ethan had spent months having strangers grab his chair and make assumptions about his body. Isabella had spent years having employers decide what she needed. Both recognized the relief of being offered a choice.
