Chapter 01 - THE MAFIA BOSS SAW HIS FIANCÉE BLAME A BRUISED MAID—THEN ONE PHOTOGRAPH EXPOSED THE SECRET SHE HAD BEEN HIDING FOR YEARS
## chapter 01 - The Lie at the Engagement Table
By ten seventeen on the night of Luca Moretti's engagement dinner, twenty-six guests had toasted his future bride, a young housemaid had been struck hard enough to leave her left eye swollen, and the woman responsible had decided the whole evening was a success.
Vanessa Bellini was wrong about only one thing: she believed Luca had stopped paying attention.
Olivia Hayes had almost completed dinner service when Luca noticed her hair falling across her injured face. She had counted three guests left to serve. Three, and she could disappear into the kitchen until her shaking hands steadied. Instead he asked her to look at him, and Vanessa supplied an explanation before Olivia opened her mouth.
"She hit the pantry door," Vanessa said, cutting her veal as though discussing a weather forecast.
The room watched Luca study the swelling beneath Olivia's eye. He asked whether anybody had hit her. Olivia glanced at Vanessa, a reflex so quick she barely knew she'd done it. Luca saw it. He also saw Vanessa's smile narrow into a warning.
He sent Olivia to the housekeeper, promised she'd receive her wages, and continued the celebration. His restraint made Vanessa careless. Forty minutes after she retired upstairs, Luca's head of security, Daniel Rusk, showed him the hallway recording.
At 3:47, Olivia entered a guest room with folded towels, unharmed. Vanessa followed with a stranger in a gray suit. Minutes later, Olivia lurched into the hallway and struck the wooden frame. The stranger escaped by the service stairs.
Daniel identified him as William Mercer, a private investigator hired by Vanessa. By the time Luca demanded an explanation, Olivia was standing in his study holding a photograph of Luca and his former wife, Sofia, outside a downtown restaurant.
Sofia had met him the previous Tuesday to discuss selling a vacation house they still owned jointly. They had spoken for twenty minutes, without touching once. Vanessa's investigator had photographed the meeting and planned to tell Sofia that Luca had been cheating with Vanessa for five years.
"Why would she want Sofia to believe that?" Luca asked.
Olivia squeezed the edges of her apron until her knuckles whitened. "Because your former wife has something Vanessa wants. She said if Sofia thinks you're working together, she'll never give you what she promised."
Luca was staring at the photograph when he noticed a second mark on its back, beneath the date: a small blue triangle, drawn in ink.
His breathing stopped. The last time he'd seen that mark, it was on a sealed envelope his father had left him before dying in a warehouse explosion. That envelope had vanished six years ago.

He raised his eyes to Olivia. "Tell me exactly what you heard. Don't leave out a word."
Outside the study, beyond its heavy oak door, a floorboard creaked. Someone was listening.
