The Verdict Without a Victory Parade

Chapter 16 - The Verdict Without a Victory Parade
Months later, Vanessa entered a plea resolving the assault case after negotiations through her lawyers. The disposition included accountability measures and conditions set by the court. Separate civil claims over retaliation and financial interference were resolved on their own terms. Adrian faced consequences in the financial case based on the transactions investigators were able to prove.
The case involving the waterfront fund recovered money that could be returned to legitimate relief programs. Additional proceedings addressed false entries and misuse of charitable resources. Publicly available findings corrected the portrayal of Matteo Greco as the architect of the scheme. For Olivia and Ruth, seeing Thomas's concerns taken seriously meant more than any headline.
The cause of the explosion remained officially unresolved. Olivia hated that uncertainty, but she refused to let it erase the truths now established: her father had tried to report wrongdoing, his account had been ignored, and people had profited from lies after he died.
At the courthouse, reporters asked Luca whether he felt vindicated. He replied that the people most affected deserved privacy and that the foundation would make its records available to independent scrutiny. Olivia declined interviews. Ruth told one determined reporter, "I don't want my daughter turned into entertainment. I want people in power to listen when someone says they're afraid."
That night Olivia cooked Thomas's birthday cake with Ruth. The top cracked, the frosting ran down one side, and they laughed at the mess. Luca arrived with a carton of ice cream and stood uncertainly in the doorway.
"You can come in," Ruth said. "But don't tell us how to fix it."

He looked at the cake. "I wouldn't dare."
The three of them ate it anyway. For one evening, nothing depended on a verdict or a camera recording. There was cake, laughter, and an ordinary table where nobody was required to lie.
