The Name on the Warehouse Door

Chapter 11 - The Name on the Warehouse Door

Investigators eventually located Matteo Greco, living under his own name in a small town in Oregon. He had not been hiding from police; after years of public accusations and unsuccessful attempts to clear his name, he had retreated from the business world. He was sixty-four and had kept copies of records no one previously wanted to examine.

He agreed to speak with federal investigators and afterward, through counsel, met Luca, Sofia, Olivia, and Ruth. He brought an old photograph showing Thomas Hayes and Angelo Moretti standing beside a delivery truck on a sunny afternoon. Both men were smiling.

Ruth touched the picture with trembling fingers. "Tom said Angelo was one of the few bosses who bothered learning the drivers' names."

Matteo nodded. "Angelo had started asking where the donated supplies went. Thomas showed him. That's why they were at the warehouse that night."

The records suggested fraudulent diversions involving companies Adrian Bellini had controlled or financed. Whether anyone had intentionally caused the explosion was still unresolved. Investigators would not promise a dramatic answer to a question that had haunted the families for six years.

Luca watched Olivia study her father's photograph. Her grief did not make her look fragile; it made her look determined. He thought about how close he'd come to overlooking her suffering because it had been inconvenient during an engagement dinner.

After the meeting, Sofia walked beside him to the parking garage. "You used to think strength meant deciding who to believe before anyone finished speaking," she said.

"I know."

"You listen now. Try to keep doing that when the people talking aren't people you care about."

He nodded. She was not asking to return to their marriage. She was asking him to become someone who wouldn't repeat the same mistakes with another woman.
