The Question Beneath the Chandelier

Chapter 19 - The Question Beneath the Chandelier
The following autumn, Luca held a fundraiser at a different venue, a community arts center where the staff had helped plan the event and the tables were round, not arranged according to wealth. The evening honored Thomas Hayes and other workers whose reports had helped expose misconduct in the relief supply chain. Ruth sat in the front row, holding an old photograph of her husband.
Olivia gave a short speech. She spoke about the difference between having a voice and being heard, about the years her mother had carried unanswered questions, and about the people who came forward when silence would have been easier. She did not mention the bruise until the end.
"A year ago," she said, "I believed losing a paycheck would mean losing everything. Someone thought that fear gave them the right to hurt me. It didn't. It never did."
The audience stood. Olivia looked toward Ruth and saw her mother crying, smiling, and clapping all at once.
Afterward, Luca led Olivia onto a quiet balcony. Streetlights reflected in the rain beneath them. He took a small box from his coat, and Olivia laughed in surprise.
"Are you about to do what I think you're about to do?"
"Probably. You can say no."
He knelt and opened the box. The ring was simple, chosen together with a jeweler who understood Olivia didn't want a public display of someone's fortune.
"Will you marry me?" Luca asked. "Not because this story owes us a happy ending. Because I love the woman you've chosen to become, and I want to keep choosing you without deciding for you."
Olivia had imagined grand speeches and a ballroom full of cameras. Instead there was cool air, wet pavement, and a man waiting for her answer.
"Yes," she said. "But you have to learn how to make my father's birthday cake."

He smiled. "Even the frosting?"
"Especially the frosting."
