The Woman He Had Failed

Chapter 03 - The Woman He Had Failed

Sofia Marin had been divorced from Luca for almost four years, yet she still knew which unanswered calls meant danger. He called her after midnight. She refused to speak until he confirmed his attorney was present and no one from Vanessa's household could overhear.

They met the next afternoon in the public reading room of a downtown law library. Sofia arrived in a cream-colored coat, carrying a worn canvas satchel. She had once been a journalist; now she worked helping families challenge wrongful property seizures. Her hair had grown longer. Luca noticed the silver strands near her temple that hadn't been there during their marriage.

"You photographed me Tuesday," Sofia said before sitting down.

"I didn't. Vanessa hired someone."

"And what did her investigator tell you?"

Luca described the staged-affair accusation, the assault on Olivia, and the small blue triangle. Sofia's face lost color. She asked one precise question: "Did he say anything about a hearing?"

"What hearing?"

She took an envelope from her bag. Six years earlier, Luca's father, Angelo Moretti, had died after an explosion at a waterfront storage warehouse. Police had called it an industrial accident, but shortly before his death Angelo had entrusted Sofia with copies of shipping records. They implicated Moretti executives and an outside finance group in diverting charitable rebuilding funds after a major storm. Angelo feared that confronting the organization would get witnesses hurt. A blue triangle marked the duplicate evidence he held outside the company.

"I tried telling you," Sofia said. "You accused me of trying to destroy your father after he died."

Luca remembered the argument, shame flooding his face. He had been grieving and surrounded by advisers who called Sofia disloyal. He had chosen their version over hers. It was one of the reasons their marriage ended.

"Why now?" he asked.

"A former accountant is ready to testify next month. The foundation's board has thirty days to preserve records before a court-supervised review. I was going to ask you to cooperate. But someone has spent weeks trying to convince me you and Vanessa are working together."

Luca stared at the envelope. "What is in the box?"

Sofia didn't open her bag. "Something Angelo hid that could clear the people blamed for the fraud. It may also show who caused the explosion. But I'm not handing it over because you finally believe me."

"What do you want?"

"The same thing I've always wanted, Luca. Stop asking me to trust you before you've earned it."
