The Hearing

Chapter 14 - The Hearing
The court proceedings unfolded slowly, without the tidy certainty Luca once expected of the world. Vanessa disputed some allegations. Mercer testified to the instructions he received. Olivia described the assault and the threats to her mother's financial assistance. Security footage confirmed the sequence at the guest-room door, while witnesses and records filled in what happened beyond the camera's view.
The parallel financial case involved Adrian's companies, diverted relief shipments, and years of complicated accounting. Prosecutors and independent auditors distinguished provable transactions from suspicion. The evidence did not establish every theory surrounding the warehouse explosion, and nobody was promised answers that the facts could not support.
Olivia sat beside Ruth during one hearing and watched Sofia explain why she had preserved Angelo's evidence instead of handing it to the same advisers who dismissed her warnings. Sofia spoke steadily, but Olivia could see how much the testimony cost her.
Afterward, Olivia found her in the courthouse hallway. "I used to think you were the villain," she admitted. "Vanessa told everyone you were jealous and bitter."
Sofia gave a tired smile. "She wasn't the first person to tell that story."
"I'm sorry I believed it."
"You didn't know me. What matters is what you did once you knew more."
They sat on a bench and talked for nearly an hour. Sofia admitted she had once loved Luca deeply and still cared whether he became a decent man, but she no longer wanted to rebuild their marriage. Olivia was relieved and ashamed of feeling relieved. Sofia noticed, then smiled gently.

"Whatever happens between you and Luca," she said, "don't let anyone turn you into proof that he's a hero. Your story belongs to you."
Olivia carried that sentence home like a gift.
