The Photograph Behind the Refrigerator

Chapter 10 - The Photograph Behind the Refrigerator
Rosa remembered an object she'd hidden in the townhouse nursery: a tiny camera shaped like a white plastic clock. Elena had purchased it before her death after several unexplained household incidents. Rosa believed it continued recording to an old local storage drive even after Raymond took control of the security system. With proper authorization, technicians searched the house and found the drive in a maintenance compartment behind the nursery refrigerator.
Many files were corrupted. Some showed ordinary scenes: Elena reading to Matthew as a toddler, Rosa folding blankets, Victor passing through the kitchen without stopping. Then a clip dated months after Elena's death showed Raymond entering the nursery and telling a crying Matthew to stop asking about his mother. 'Big boys don't make noise,' Raymond said. The child reached for his stuffed rabbit. Raymond took it away.
Victor watched the clip with professionals handling the evidence. He wanted to smash the screen. Instead, he made himself listen. The recording included references to the black room and to punishments if Matthew spoke about what happened when Victor was away. It gave investigators a clearer basis for examining the boy's statements without forcing him to repeat painful details unnecessarily.
A second video showed Rosa arguing with Raymond. 'You cannot keep doing this,' she said. Raymond replied, 'He's my brother's boy. My brother trusts me.' Rosa answered, 'Then you're betraying them both.' Raymond stepped toward her, and the image cut off. The timestamp preceded her disappearance by less than two hours.
The authorities worked to preserve the files and establish their authenticity. Victor remembered telling Raymond that the nursery equipment was probably unnecessary. Elena had insisted otherwise. She had been trying to build a record he had dismissed as excessive worry. He walked outside afterward and sat on the townhouse steps until sunset.
Hannah learned about the recordings only when relevant information was shared through her attorney. She did not ask to watch the child being mistreated. She had no need to see him suffering to believe him. Instead she sent Victor a short message: 'Please tell Matthew he doesn't have to prove anything else to deserve safety.' Victor read it twice before showing it to Dr. Ortiz.
Matthew began showing progress. He still startled at raised voices, and unexpected changes upset him, but he asked questions more often. One morning he told Victor he didn't like the dark and wanted a lamp in the hallway. Victor bought one with a paper moonshade. Matthew chose the position himself. Small decisions began filling the space where fear had lived.

Denise's health fluctuated. Hannah missed one bakery shift to take her to an appointment, then told Mrs. Kaplan she needed a more sustainable schedule. Mrs. Kaplan worked with her. Hannah was surprised that asking for help did not always result in punishment. 'You've spent too long assuming every request is a debt,' Denise told her.
Then the investigators received a new witness statement. Raymond's driver, pressured by the preserved footage and warehouse records, agreed to describe the night Rosa vanished. His statement implicated Raymond in arranging her removal and named a second man involved. An arrest warrant followed. When Victor heard the news, he was sitting on the floor building a paper city with Matthew. He did not get up. He simply put another cardboard house beside the boy's hospital, and kept building.
