The Room Nobody Was Supposed to Know About

Chapter 02 - The Room Nobody Was Supposed to Know About

Hannah moved the chair away from the private room's door so Matthew could see the hallway. She placed the chocolate cake within reach, kept her hands in her lap, and told him he did not have to speak. Children who had been frightened into silence did not suddenly become brave because an adult requested it. She remembered that from volunteering at a neighborhood after-school program before medical bills forced her to take a second job.

Matthew ate a crumb of cake, then another. His fork trembled, but he stopped shaking when Hannah told him he could put it down. 'Did I ruin Daddy's dinner?' he asked. 'Dinner can be replaced.' 'Uncle Raymond says things Daddy buys are more important than feelings.' Hannah breathed slowly. 'He was wrong.' Matthew considered this. 'Daddy buys lots of things,' he said. 'He never buys time.'

Outside the room, Victor listened to Marco explain how the boy had been sitting silently for forty minutes before the explosion. Then he demanded to see every camera angle from the evening. Marco began to protest that the security office was closed to guests. Victor's expression stopped him. 'I am not asking as a guest,' he said, and Marco realized the danger in refusing him was not simply financial.

Victor had been away from home seventeen nights in the preceding month. His wife, Elena, had died in a highway collision eighteen months earlier; after the funeral he buried himself in work. Raymond stepped into the opening. He offered to supervise the household, handle medical appointments, and watch over Matthew. It seemed like the kindest thing his brother had ever done. Victor had thanked him. He now remembered with shame that his thanks had been followed by months of silence about what Matthew might need.

Raymond arrived beside the private-room door. 'He's tired,' he said. 'I'll bring him home.' Victor blocked the entrance. 'You stay here.' Raymond laughed without humor. 'Seriously?' 'What did Matthew mean by the black room?' 'It's a game. He doesn't like losing.' Victor watched his brother's face. 'Then he can explain that to me himself, when he feels safe enough.'

Hannah heard the exchange and saw Matthew fold inward. She walked to the door. 'Mr. Davis, please ask your brother to wait somewhere else.' Raymond's eyes narrowed. 'You work here. You don't make decisions for this family.' Victor replied before Hannah could: 'Tonight she has made better decisions than either of us.'

Matthew slid from his chair when Raymond finally left. 'He says nobody believes kids.' Hannah looked at him. 'I do.' The boy pointed at a red mark circling his wrist. 'He puts a band around me when I won't stop asking for Mommy.' Hannah's chest tightened. She did not touch the mark or ask him to demonstrate. 'You did the right thing telling me,' she said. 'You can tell your dad too, when you're ready.'

Victor entered only after Hannah asked whether Matthew wanted him. He knelt a few feet away, a large man suddenly looking fragile. 'Buddy, I didn't know.' Matthew stared at the carpet. 'You always say Raymond knows best.' Victor swallowed. 'That was my mistake.' 'If I talk,' Matthew whispered, 'will he hurt Nana?' Victor stopped breathing. Nana was Rosa Alvarez, Matthew's former nanny, whom Raymond claimed had quit without notice two months earlier.

'Where is Rosa?' Victor asked. Matthew's little fingers dug into Hannah's sleeve. 'Uncle Raymond said she went to the river and wasn't coming back.' Victor turned toward the door. His expression became so cold that Hannah reached for his sleeve with her free hand. 'Not in front of him,' she said. 'Whatever you do next, don't make him afraid of you too.'

Victor stayed. He sat on the floor beside the child he had almost lost without knowing it. An hour later, a security technician delivered footage of the restaurant entrance. At 7:42, Raymond had bent down beside Matthew and whispered something. The microphone caught only the final sentence: 'Remember what happens when you disobey.' The moment those words played, Matthew began crying again. Victor stopped the video. He no longer needed to wonder why his son had thrown the first glass.
