A Place for Rosa

Chapter 16 - A Place for Rosa
Rosa was finally well enough to return to New York permanently. Victor offered to restore her old position at twice her former salary. She thanked him and declined. 'I love Matthew,' she said. 'But I need a life where my safety doesn't depend on how kindly the Davis family is feeling.' Victor nodded. 'You deserve that.' It was an answer he could not have given a year earlier.
Instead, he helped support an independently managed fund for childcare workers seeking legal assistance after threats or abuse. Rosa joined its advisory group on her own terms. The program was small at first. It paid for consultations, helped workers preserve records, and connected families with qualified services. Hannah contributed ideas from her own experience but insisted there be no glossy posters featuring her face.
Denise's condition improved enough that she could spend more time outdoors. She still had appointments and difficult days. Hannah learned to balance caregiving with her own goals. She completed her first training course and began applying to assistant roles in community youth programs. For once, she no longer introduced herself only as the daughter paying medical bills.
Victor and Hannah grew close slowly. One evening he invited her to dinner at a modest neighborhood restaurant rather than Romano's. She said yes after making him promise not to reserve the entire dining room. He wore a plain sweater. She arrived in a yellow dress Denise had encouraged her to buy. For the first twenty minutes they talked about nothing more dangerous than bad coffee and New York weather.
Then Hannah set down her fork. 'We have to talk about something.' Victor looked concerned. She continued, 'Matthew sees me as someone safe. I won't enter his life as a substitute for Elena, and I won't disappear from it if we decide we're wrong for each other.' Victor listened. 'I don't want to rush you,' he said. 'Or him.' Hannah studied him. 'And I will keep working. I won't become another person whose choices are arranged by a Davis.' Victor smiled faintly. 'I'd be disappointed if you did.'
They ended the evening with a walk along the waterfront. Victor spoke about Elena with a tenderness Hannah had not heard before. He admitted that grief had made him feel guilty whenever he experienced happiness. Hannah told him loving someone new did not erase the person he had lost. Neither made promises about marriage. They agreed to keep talking and to protect Matthew from adult uncertainty.

A week later Victor told Matthew he had taken Hannah to dinner. The boy looked up from his cookbook. 'Like a date?' Victor nearly dropped his coffee. 'Maybe.' Matthew considered this, then returned to the recipe. 'Don't make her eat food if she doesn't want it.' Victor laughed. 'I won't.' The boy paused. 'And don't yell.' Victor put down his cup. 'I'm working on that.'
Matthew nodded thoughtfully. 'Good. Because Miss Hannah doesn't like yelling.' Victor watched him measure flour with care. He wondered when his son had become the person best able to remind him what mattered.
